Just when you think San Antonio’s vibrant food scene can’t get any better, new flavor sprouts from roots that have been a part of the city’s culinary scene for 70 years. Bold flavors, vibrant cultures, and rich history of South Texas, presented with creativity and style for an extraordinary dining experience? It all comes together at LAZO with Don Strange, where you can enjoy Texas ambiance and flavors suited for any occasion.
LAZO is nestled inside the beautifully renovated Estancia del Norte San Antonio, part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton. The hotel blends art, business and history to create a fantastic San Antonio experience, with LAZO adding unforgettable flavor to the mix. The name is a nod to the Spanish origins of the word lasso, and here it means bringing people together to celebrate. After one visit, you’ll be glad you joined in.
The menu (available on Open Table, where you can also make reservations) features favorites from 70 years of Don Strange of Texas culinary history and Texas hospitality. If you’ve ever been to a function catered by Don Strange of Texas, you know the flavor and service that name defines. It’s the best of Texas, served with style and flare for a memorable meal every time.
LAZO definitely fits the bill, with a menu sprinkled with Don Strange classics and flavors sure to become favorites. You’re greeted by Gaga’s Famous Bread, a dense loaf of flavor topped with honey butter. Bread lovers could easily end their meal there and walk away raving.
A cruise through the appetizers could easily make a perfect meal, tapas-sharing style. Don’t miss the Grilled White Wings, a signature Don Strange classic. Originally created by Don Strange 40 years ago for a dinner hosted by Prince Ranier for the Grace Kelly Foundation, they’re a bite of Texas and nobody does the combination of chicken, jalapeno, Monterey Jack cheese and bacon better. Another Don Strange classic is the Sauteed Oysters, which are fresh and served on the shell, but leave room for the Pistachio Lamb Chops. The presentation is “Insta”-worthy and the flavor is perfect.
The salads are also picture-perfect, with the Spinach Salad featuring perfectly spread avocado slices sprinkled with strawberries and almonds. The Caesar includes cornbread croutons with a perfect crunch and Roasted Beets salad is a rainbow of colors. If you choose to go the gumbo route, know that the serving is a meal itself – and that the whole table will want some when they see and smell it.
The same can be said for the Mesquite-Grilled Beef Tenderloin, a whole tenderloin sliced to order. When it arrives at your table, have your knife and fork ready to fend off your fellow diners. Perfectly cooked and served with a miniature iron skillet with creamy corn pudding, you won’t want to share.
Other fantastic entrées include a Red Snapper with butter-poached shrimp, Prime Ribeye with an amazing smoked herb butter and for those going meatless, Pasto, Pesto and Peas, a dish of gnocchi, spring peas and basil cream sauce. Each entrée is served with a full-sized side, all of which are designed for sharing. But when they’re this good, there’s no shame in keeping them all to yourself.
Celebrations require toasting and LAZO makes that tastefully easy with signature cocktails from Paseo, Estancia del Norte’s beautiful bar just steps away from LAZO. The cocktail menu includes traditional options, but how can you resist the Summer Breeze, with champagne, thyme, simple syrup and peach liqueur or the Raspberry Beret, with gin, lime juice, fresh raspberries, Topo Chico and simple syrup? Or check out the Poteet Sweet, a nod to the flavorful strawberries in Poteet. Even better: each month there’s a signature cocktail with proceeds dedicated to local nonprofit, so your libations do good while you’re having a good time.
Of course LAZO doesn’t end there. What would an occasion be without dessert? A Don Strange classic is Texas Peach Cobbler, featuring Fredericksburg peaches topped with a crunchy streusel and drizzled in a whiskey caramel sauce, then topped with white chocolate gelato. Yes, you read that right. It’s decadent and lovely – and meant to be shared. Another must: Samoa Pot de Crème, the winner of the 2022 Girl Scout Cookie Flavor Fest by the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas. It captures everything you love about the classic Samoa cookie, but throws in a decadent chocolate custard, Chantilly and smooth dulce de leche. Now that is something to celebrate!
