Do you have picky eaters in your house? Or are you just tired of the fried nuggets, fries and macaroni being the only options on the kids’ menu? One visit to Songkran Thai Grill will change not only your mind, but also the minds of your reluctant eaters.
I visited the restaurant with my three children in tow and we started out with some appetizers. Although these are favorites from the adult menu – they were made especially with kids in mind. The Goong Ka-Bok/chicken and shrimp crispy roll with pickled plum sauce and Kari Puff/baked curry potato puff are wonderful starters that any child will enjoy. Nuer Sawan or “Heavenly Beef” is oven dried sirloin that has been marinated for 24 hours and although it is usually served mixed with Sriracha sauce, it tastes just as good with the sauce on the side. One of the many great things about Songkran is that almost everything comes with a dipping sauce, which little ones will appreciate.
After the appetizers were devoured it was time to move onto the main course. Songkran does not depart from its Thai menu to cater to kids, but instead make Thai food that kids will enjoy. Stay Gai/Chicken Satay, Si-Kring Moo/Crispy marinated glazed pork ribs and Pad Thai were three of the choices from the kids menu. The food is served on authentic bamboo trays which the kids loved and the portions were very large. Each meal comes with the entrée, vegetable spring rolls, a small salad, cookies and of course dipping sauce. The chicken was flavorful and tender, the ribs were tasty and perfectly marinated and the Pad Thai was full of chicken and very easy to eat. Needless to say, there wasn’t a lot of talking going on…the kids were too busy eating.
Adults won’t be disappointed either. I tried two of the Uptown Signature dishes; Pad Ga Pow with shrimp and Kang Khew Waan with chicken. The Pad Ga Pow is a light dish with large shrimp, bell peppers, onions and basil. It is full of hearty flavors, but light enough that you won’t leave feeling overfull. The Kang Khew Waan is a green curry dish served with steamed rice and had just the right amount of curry flavor, so that it didn’t overwhelm the dish. It has a bit of spice from ground chili peppers and wonderfully tender chicken.
Songkran has two locations.Songkran has two locations. Songkran Thai Grill in Sugar Land Town Center has a Thai “street food” menu with more grilled and noodle options. Songkran Thai Kitchen located in Uptown Park serves more traditional Thai food with a higher end feel. There are many items on the menu that overlap, but each restaurant has its own signature dishes. Executive Chef and owner Jett Hurapan is a Thailand native who began cooking in New York City as a 14 year old prep chef. After working in several notable restaurants, Chef Jett moved to Houston in 2011 and his Texas career began. Chef Jett works alongside his wife Jira Hurapan, also a native of Thailand, who is not only his business partner, but also the pastry chef for the Songkran restaurants.
A visit to either location won’t disappoint – both young and old will enjoy an authentic Thai meal made with the freshest ingredients available.
