“Tragedy Girls” is proof teenagers have too much time on their hands.

Perfect for Halloween movie night, this SXSW pick is about best friends Sadie Cunningham played by Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool, First Girl I Loved) and McKayla Hooper played by Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse) who are all about social media. In fact, to the point of death. The girls are bent on boosting their social media fan base and when the movie opens they are doing it by acting as amateur crime reporters on the story of their town’s local serial killer.

They capture the killer, but when he doesn’t turn out to be as interesting as they hoped, they decide to take matters into their own hands and kill the victims themselves. This has the local high school they attend up in arms and fearful. No one can guess it’s these two little geniuses doing all the damage.

Soon their social media status @TragedyGirls grows, but not without panic taking over the town as Sadie and McKayla’s killing spree continues.

A campy little horror film in the same vein as “Scream,” director Tyler MacIntyre has the formula for horror without taking the film too seriously.

“The concept of Tragedy Girls emerged when we were trying to find something fresh and original in the most well-worn cinematic territory – the slasher movie,” MacIntyre said of the film. “My tastes tend to lean toward the subversive, so we somehow managed to back ourselves into a violent, peppy take on media and violence.”

The “Tragedy Girls” satire also takes a look at the narcissism of the social media culture through the eyes of these two, young psychopathic teenage characters.

MacIntyre, who was mentored by icons such as Peter Bogdanovich and Roger Corman co-wrote “Tragedy Girls” with fellow Canadian Chris Lee Hill.

Indeed, these two did find the formula and voice for a fun ride with “Tragedy Girls” offering audacious characters and an overall fun ensemble that will give viewer’s laughs throughout while all the time keeping the tone fun.
