King Cake Pancakes: Celebrate International Pancake Day and Fat Tuesday while Giving Back to the Community

Fluffy, sweet, chocolatey, savory, fruity and even sweet veggie tastes.

That’s the best way to describe the variety of special pancakes that Snooze, an A.M. Eatery will offer for one day only on Tuesday, February 13. The popular statewide breakfast spot is celebrating International Pancake Day by giving back to the community. All pancake sales on Tuesday in Austin will be donated to local community garden projects, including the projects at Becker Elementary and Sunshine Community Gardens. In Houston and Katy pancake sales will benefit the local community garden at Arabic Immersion Magnet School via Urban Harvest, Gregory Lincoln Education Center, Rummel Creek Elementary and the Katy Prairie Conservancy. And in San Antonio, the local community garden at San Antonio Food Bank will benefit from pancake sales.

“Snooze is really big on sustainability,” said Byron Holden, general manager at the North Lamar Snooze Austin location. “Snooze is more about culture. As a company, we do donate about 1% of our sales each year. It’s important to us to give back and try to leave the world a little greener.”

 

On Tuesday, during International Pancake Day at Snooze, if a taste of veggies is your thing, you’re sure to love Peter Rabbit’s Perfect Pancake (center), which tastes like carrot cake and is topped with fresh carrots, but is also filled with white chocolate chips and decked with bourbon maple syrup, cream cheese drizzle and a thyme whipped mascarpone and almond crumble. Green, purple and gold beads will also be a theme at the restaurant for International Pancake Day. Tuesday is also “Fat Tuesday” so Snooze will be celebrating Mardi Gras, with servers ready to dress the part. No Mardi Gras celebration is complete without a little King Cake. Topped with lemon curd, blueberry mascarpone and toasted coconut, Snooze’s signature pancake will be transformed into a King Cake for one day, including the chance to win a prize. True to the Mardi Gras tradition, guests who find a baby, AKA “the jack” in their King Cake pancake will win a $25 Snooze gift card and a Snooze pancake t-shirt.

Cherry Chocolate Pie and Whiskey Cake will also appear on the limited time menu – along with probably one of the most unique pancakes – the Just in Queso. A more hearty and savory pancake, the Just in Queso is made with cornmeal with roasted corn and topped with homemade queso, featuring Polidori Chorizo.

Truly something for everything, there are gluten free options on the menu, including the Just in Queso and the Polidori Johnny cakes, which are cornmeal pancakes filled with andouille Polidori sausage, topped with strawberry jalapeno jam and maple syrup.

“We encourage people to come in and get some food and help us give back,” said Holden. “We will also have people hopefully from the Sunshine Community Gardens on hand to talk about the projects.”
