Christmas is officially in the air and I am dreaming about the Christmas markets over in Germany.

Luckily, in Texas we have the historic German town of Fredericksburg, which is the perfect Christmas destination. Walk down the historic district covered in lights while sipping on warm mulled wine, go on a holiday wine tour, take an enchanting hike, stay in a charming bed and breakfast, and so much more.

Christmas in Fredericksburg

Get your Christmas shopping done in one of the many boutiques filling the historic district. During Christmas time the stores are lit up with Christmas decorations making for a magical stroll. In Fredericksburg you can walk around the district with a wine and beer so grab some mulled wine from one of the shops for a sip and shop experience. Even if it’s not the season, there is a Christmas store open year round for that Christmas magic whenever you need it. Since this is a German town, make sure to stop at Der Lindenbaum for authentic German food! After shopping you can stop by Marktplatz for more lights, a 30-foot Christmas tree, a German Christmas pyramid and ice skating.

Holiday Wine Trail

Fredericksburg is the wine country of Texas and along U.S. Highway 290 you’ll find over 70 vineyards and wineries. It’s perfect to visit anytime of the year, but during Christmas you can enjoy wine tastings with carolers, holiday lights, warm fires and an abundance of festivities. Just be warned that once you visit, you will want to come back to visit your favorite wineries as well as discover new ones. There are also options for non-wine drinkers such as peach and chocolate tastings. Alstadt Brewery just opened up and has the most authentic Texas German beer, with brewing methods hailing from the German purity law of 1516.

Enchanted Rock

Now that the Texas heat has taken a break, Enchanted Rock is a beautiful Texas hiking destination. At the top you are rewarded with views of the rolling Hill Country. For a breathtaking view of the sky, join a guided night star tour. Plus, it’s a great way to work off all of the hearty German food.

Stay at a Bed and Breakfast

Fredericksburg is filled with an abundance of unique B&Bs—from homey spots in the historic district, to charming bungalows right on the properties of the vineyards, rejuvenating spa homes, and luxurious castle-like suites overlooking the Hill Country and more. Take your pick—there are plenty of different experiences to choose from.
