Described as a “musical comedy dream,” “Hello, Dolly!” is delighting Broadway musical fans across Texas by coming soon to Austin, Fort Worth and Houston.
Based on a character who—literally—wears multiple hats as a widow, a matchmaker and a professional meddler, the musical centers around Dolly Levi’s decision that her next match should be someone for herself.
A newer revival musical, “Hello, Dolly!” opened on Broadway in 2017. Since then, the musical has shattered box office records and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival.
Ahead of the much anticipated Texas arrival of this much lauded musical , we spoke with Sean Burns, who plays Barnaby Tucker.
What is your favorite thing about your character, Barnaby Tucker?
Barnaby is Cornelius’ best friend. (Editor’s note: in the 1969 Oscar-winning movie starring Barbra Streisand in the title role, Phantom of the Opera’s Michael Crawford played Cornelius.) Whether they are working together at Vandergelder’s Hay and Feed or sneaking out on their New York adventure, he doesn’t leave Cornelius’ side. He’s a little naive, but he truly wants what’s best for everyone around him. That is my favorite thing about him.
Do you have a favorite song or scene?
My favorite scene is in Irene Molloy’s hat shop. While playing hooky, Cornelius and Barnaby hide inside from Mr. Vandergelder. The chaos that ensues once their boss enters the hat shop is a lot of fun to do.
How do you think Dolly’s matchmaking skills would fair in today’s dating scene?
Honestly, I think she’d be just as successful today. Dolly is a master of getting the right two people in the same place at the same time. Once she’s done that, everything seems to take care of itself.
What do you hope audiences take away from this production?
“Hello, Dolly!” is simply a feel-good story. I think this production has the ability to really make you forget your troubles and get wrapped up in a big love story. It’s so easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day, and our show really helps people break away from that. I hope everyone leaves happier than they came.
Why should our Texas Lifestyle Magazine readers come and see this musical?
With Broadway veterans Carolee Carmello and John Bolton at the helm, the entire ensemble of this show truly puts on a spectacle day after day. There is so much to be enjoyed from gorgeous costuming and sets, to the amazing dancers and singers. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and humming at least one of the tunes.
“Hello, Dolly!” makes stops in Houston January 7-12 at the Hobby Center; January 14-19 in Fort Worth and January 21-26 at Bass Concert Hall in Austin.
