Routinely voted as one of the nation’s top small towns, Fredericksburg is a must-visit for a Texas summer getaway.
Centrally located in the Texas Hill Country, the charming German community is an easy, scenic drive from just about anywhere in the state. With its convenient middle-of-the-state location, Fredericksburg is a great road trip base. With over 20 hotels and nearly 1,500 vacation rentals, the places to stay in Fredericksburg can suit anyone’s style and budget.
Mid-May through mid-August, enjoy a juicy Texas Hill Country peach straight from the orchard. Dozens of roadside stands are filled with baskets of just-picked peaches, plus homemade peach cobbler and peach ice cream, along with peach jams, jellies and other fresh-from-the-garden produce.
Fredericksburg has legendary shopping with over 150 unique shops and boutiques, plus a diverse culinary scene from authentic German to Texas BBQ to casual patio dining.
Meanwhile, the wineries of Texas Wine Country offer plenty of space to enjoy scenic views and award-winning wine. And at the end of the summer, it will be grape harvest season in Fredericksburg – plan for grape stomps, vintner dinners and picking parties.
Three Can’t-Miss Summertime Events
• To celebrate all things peach, head to the Stonewall Peach JAMboree, which features a rodeo, peach contests and live music, June 16-18.
• Experience a small-town July 4th celebration in Fredericksburg from Thursday, June 30 through Monday, July 4, with fireworks, live music, a parade and horse racing.
• Take in the sights and sounds of the state’s oldest, continuous county fair from August 25-28 at the Gillespie County Fair & Parade
The National Museum of the Pacific War provides an air-conditioned adventure with interactive exhibits and plenty of opportunities for all ages to learn about World War II. Learn about the town’s earliest settlers at Pioneer Museum – a 3.5 acre museum complex featuring structures that date back over 150 years.
Other family-friendly activities include the Lyndon B. Johnson State and National Historical Parks – where visitors will get a first-hand look at not only the 36th President’s place of birth, but also his ultimate resting place at the beloved ranch. The LBJ State Park is home to the Sauer-Beckman Living History Farm, where visitors can get an up close look at a typical farm from the early 1900s including farm animals.
To hike one of Fredericksburg’s most popular attractions, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, be sure to make reservations, or head to one of the other great outdoor opportunities in town.
One night-time outdoor activity to enjoy is stargazing under the big Hill Country skies. As an International Dark Sky Community, Fredericksburg is one of the top places in Texas to see the stars and is home to two international dark sky parks.
