When you think of visiting a national park, you likely imagine hiking through scenic trails, spotting wildlife, and soaking up the beauty of the great outdoors. Hot Springs, Arkansas, takes the typical national park experience and adds its own unique twist.
Nestled in the heart of the Ouachita Mountains, this charming town is known for its natural hot springs, rich history, and a laid-back vibe that makes it the perfect place to relax, recharge, and explore.
A Natural Haven with a Storied Past
Hot Springs, Arkansas, has been a destination to rest and rejuvenate for centuries. Native American tribes were the first to recognize the healing properties of the area’s natural thermal baths. Later, in the 19th century, the city blossomed into a bustling retreat for those seeking wellness with a dash of luxury. Today, Hot Springs National Park preserves this legacy, offering visitors the chance to soak in its natural beauty and therapeutic waters.
Interestingly, Hot Springs National Park is the oldest protected area in the National Park System. While less sprawling than well-known parks such as Yellowstone and Yosemite, this unique location focuses on the thermal springs and their historical significance to make it a standout destination for those in search of a wellness-centered, restorative experience.
Exploring Bathhouse Row
One of Hot Springs’ most iconic attractions includes Bathhouse Row, a collection of eight historic bathhouses lining Central Avenue. Each bathhouse tells its own story, blending history, culture, and relaxation.
Quapaw and Buckstaff Bathhouses: These two bathhouses continue to offer traditional thermal baths and spa treatments. From soothing soaks to rejuvenating massages, this duo carries on the Hot Springs wellness tradition.
Fordyce Bathhouse: Now a visitors’ center and museum, this beautifully restored building provides fascinating insights into the history of the Springs and the “golden age” of bathing culture. Step into Edwardian times to catch a glimpse of how guests originally experienced treatments and even exercise programs designed to naturally restore their good health.
Superior Bathhouse Brewery: This bathhouse row unicorn is the only brewery located inside a national park. They even use the thermal spring water to craft their beer, making it a must-visit for craft beer enthusiasts seeking more suds in their glasses than tubs.
Hale Bathhouse: Converted into a luxury boutique hotel, the Hale invites visitors to stay where history meets modern comfort and style. Each room’s private bathtub runs thermal water at your own convenience.
Lamar Bathhouse: Home to the Bathhouse Emporium, this location celebrates local craftsmanship including ornate architecture surrounding a carefully curated selection of handmade goods and souvenirs
For history buffs, the Arlington Hotel is another must-see landmark located just down Central Avenue. This iconic hotel has hosted everyone from Al Capone to Babe Ruth and even a few U.S. presidents. Guests can book spa packages or simply soak in the ambiance of this historical icon in town. The ornate lobby is worthy of your time to check out a variety of live musicians frequently entertaining a crowd of hotel guests, tourists, and even locals.
Outdoor Adventures Await
If you’re ready to stretch your legs and take in the fresh mountain air, Hot Springs offers plenty of outdoor adventures. The Ouachita Mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop for hiking, biking, and more. One way to see stunning views of the city and surrounding area is to take the Hot Springs Mountain Trail. On this trail you will be able to stop at the Hot Springs Tower for an ever better view of the area. For the more adventurous hiker wanting more of a challenge, the ten mile Sunset Trail is for you. The trail leads up to the West Mountain for a sweeping view of the Ouachita Mountains. With over 40,000 acres of water, Lake Ouachita is a haven for boating, swimming and kayaking. Whether looking for a quiet stroll or an adrenaline rush, this location answers the call of every outdoor enthusiast. Mountain bikers, hikers, and trail runners rave about the Northwoods Trail system boasting 32 miles of mountain bike trails.
Wellness Beyond the Springs
Wellness is at the heart of the Hot Springs experience. Beyond a thermal water soak, try out a yoga class while surrounded by the lush beauty of Garvan Woodland Gardens. Consider booking a reiki or meditation session at one of the town’s wellness centers. These peaceful spaces welcome the release of your daily stress and burdens in exchange for a sense of calm.
A Culinary Journey
Food lovers will be thrilled by the diverse dining options offered by the city of Hot Springs. Whether craving hearty Southern comfort food or international cuisine, you will find no shortage of delicious bites in the most convenient and accessible locations.
For four generations, McClard’s Bar-B-Q has been serving up their signature barbecue consisting of smoky ribs, pulled pork, and their signature tangy barbecue sauce. As the story goes, they acquired the popular sauce recipe from a traveler who couldn’t afford the $10 for his two months of rent. In exchange, he offered the recipe for “the world’s greatest bar-b-que sauce.” Now McClard’s Bar-B-Q is a Hot Springs institution and essential eatery for visitors.
In the mood for some live music and an exceptionally juicy burger served in more than just the average bar with a speakeasy vibe? The Ohio Club answers with its elaborately hand-crafted original 1905 wooden bar created in the state that allegedly gave this establishment its name, and the rest is history. Arkansas’ oldest bar, The Ohio Club was visited by a string of well-known characters including mobsters Al Capone and Bugsy Segel. Baseball legend Babe Ruth even frequented the bar during his many spring training trips to Hot Springs. With a cigar store front cover during Prohibition, the Ohio Club dealt in far more than tobacco. If walls could talk, this bar would spill more than just tea!
If in the mood for something a little more upscale yet still jonesing for southern flavors, grab a table at The Avenue. This sophisticated yet welcoming spot takes Southern classics and elevates them with creative twists that’ll make your taste buds sing. While the menu often evolves to reflect the seasons and fresh, local ingredients, the creativity and care put into every dish remain constant. Foodies in search of culinary innovation and travelers simply in search of great cuisine will not want to miss this dining gem. Reservations are highly recommended for this favorite spot of the locals and visitors alike!
Let us not forget the drinking water! Hot Springs’ famous mineral water is available for free at several fountains serving as natural hydration stations located around town. Locals and visitors alike often fill their personal bottles to take home a taste of the springs or serve up in their businesses.
Festivals and Events
Hot Springs knows how to celebrate, with festivals and events happening year-round. One of the quirkiest is the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, held on the 98-foot-long Bridge Street. With floats, music, and plenty of green, this annual event guarantees a lively and unforgettable experience.
Other highlights include the free Big Steam Blues and Roots Music Festival, drawing musicians from around the world, and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, one of the country’s oldest film festivals. Seasonal arts and crafts fairs, car shows, and holiday events ensure something is always happening in this vibrant little Arkansas town. The World Championship Running of the Tubs features costumed teams pushing bathtubs on wheels down historic bathhouse row the first weekend in June.
Where to Stay
Hot Springs accommodations offer something for every style and budget. Blending history and luxury, the Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa first opened at the current location in 1924. Visitors swoon over the elegant rooms, full-service spa, and the iconic location. For a cozier vibe, consider staying at the 1884 Tinkerbell’s Wildwood Bed & Breakfast.
