With walkable pockets along the downtown bayfront and multiple ways to enjoy the water, Corpus Christi offers a laid-back beach trip. For a coastal escape without the crowds of larger beach destinations, the city has the appeal of a “big small town,” with plenty of restaurants, museums and outdoor adventures to explore.

Corpus Christi lends itself to a getaway that reveals different sides of the city: one day spent exploring the downtown bayfront, another reserved for the beach and a third centered around one of its major attractions.

Comfortable Corpus Christi Hotels 

Choosing the right home base is the first step in planning the trip. Travelers who want to spend more time along the downtown bayfront can stay close to Shoreline Boulevard, while those seeking a beach-focused escape may prefer North Padre Island.

For direct access to Corpus Christi Bay, book a stay at Holiday Inn Express Corpus Christi Beachfront. McGee Beach and Emerald Beach are both less than a 10-minute walk away, while Cole Park Pier, a scenic fishing pier, is about a 15-minute stroll. Another option is the newly built Homewood Suites by Hilton Corpus Christi Downtown, where guests can spend the evening at the rooftop bar or try one of the hotel’s Topgolf Swing Suites.

Near North Beach, DoubleTree by Hilton Corpus Christi Beachfront provides sweeping views of Corpus Christi Bay. The hotel also features a restaurant, swim-up bar and balconies to take in sunrises and sunsets.

Along the seawall, stop at Mirador de la Flor, the bayfront memorial honoring Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

The Coastal Bend’s creative community comes into focus at the Art Center of Corpus Christi. Seven galleries showcase local artists, and admission is free. Located inside the Art Center, Gallery 41 Water’s Edge Grill is a convenient stop for lunch, pairing waterfront views with an elevated menu. On Wednesday evenings, the Art Center’s courtyard hosts the Grow Local Farmers Market, where visitors can peruse regional art and shop for fresh produce.

A short drive or longer waterfront walk from the Art Center, the Art Museum of South Texas makes a worthwhile second stop during a bayfront arts outing. The museum’s collection features art from the Americas, with many works from Texas. 

Continue inland to the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures & Education Center in Corpus Christi’s SEA District. Highlights include the largest display of Hakata dolls in the world, a 17th-century bronze Buddha statue and hands-on activities such as origami, calligraphy and kite building.

After a day spent exploring museums and the promenade, head to Executive Surf Club for a casual downtown dinner. The longtime Corpus Christi hangout serves beach-inspired comfort food with live local music.

Big Attractions on North Beach

North Beach is home to two of Corpus Christi’s signature attractions, making it easy to dedicate an entire day to experiencing both. The USS Lexington Museum gives visitors the chance to explore a World War II-era aircraft carrier through five self-guided tour routes spanning 11 decks. The popular Flight Deck tour features historic aircraft, anti-aircraft guns and exhibits tied to naval history. The Lexington also has a Hollywood connection: parts of the 2001 film “Pearl Harbor” were filmed aboard the ship.

Families and groups interested in marine life can head to the Texas State Aquarium. Home to more than 300 species, the aquarium includes sharks, sea turtles and stingrays. Attend one of the engaging animal presentations, such as Dolphins! or Turtle Tales. The Shoreline Grill is on site for a bite to eat during the outing. 

After returning downtown, share some bites and cocktails at The Mariner. Located upstairs at Harrison’s Landing in the Downtown Marina, the waterfront lounge is a great place to unwind at the end of an adventurous day. 

Beach Adventures on North Padre Island

Set aside a day for the beaches on North Padre Island with easy access to North Packery Beach and Michael J. Ellis Beach & Seawall. Off-beach parking is free in many areas, while a small parking permit fee allows guests to drive and park directly on designated beaches.

Before heading toward North Padre Island, stop for breakfast at Bien Mérité. The French-inspired, pink-themed bakery serves coffee, croissants, crepes and savory breakfast favorites.

For a fun, casual outing with friends and family, check out Sandbox Beach Bar. Its turquoise-and-orange shipping-container design adds a colorful backdrop to the beachfront setting. Order a cold drink and grab a snack from one of the rotating food trucks. Groups can play beach volleyball, pickleball and other outdoor games.

A stop at Padre Island Burger Company, a Corpus Christi staple, makes for a hearty lunch. This funky burger bar serves the “World Famous” LuLu burger, a 1/2-pound Black Angus patty topped with smoked bacon, jalapeño jelly, cream cheese and jalapeños.

A peaceful way to experience the Corpus Christi sunset is a horseback ride on the beach. Horses on the Beach offers guided rides along the sand, with waves rolling in the distance and the sun disappearing across the horizon.

Have a waterfront dinner at Doc’s Seafood & Steaks with views of the Laguna Madre. The restaurant is known for seafood, hand-cut steaks and cocktails. Downstairs is The Waterline, an open-air venue with a full bar. Guests can bring their fresh catch to be cleaned and filleted, and the kitchen will prepare it grilled, blackened or fried.

After Dark in Corpus Christi

Travelers ages 18 and older can end the day on the water with a guided nighttime kayak tour from GlowRow. Tours depart from the Corpus Christi Marina and North Padre Island. The kayaks are clear and LED-lit with glowing paddles, creating a colorful view of the water below. Guests may spot marine life such as mullet, stingrays, blue crabs and jellyfish.

Those looking for a more sophisticated evening can head to Nueces Whiskey Library. The upscale lounge features a global whiskey selection, craft cocktails and a European-inspired menu with tapas and entrées. Its dim lighting and old-world atmosphere create an intimate setting for drinks, small plates and conversation.

Plan Around Fall and Holiday Events

Corpus Christi’s coastal appeal continues into fall, when festivals, outdoor events and cultural celebrations provide even more reasons to visit.

September brings MusicWalk to downtown Corpus Christi with live music, local vendors and food trucks, while Celebration of Flight welcomes families to Hazel Bazemore County Park for outdoor activities centered around the area’s annual hawk migration.

October is highlighted by the Texas Jazz Festival, which fills Heritage Park with free live jazz, food and market vendors, while Surftoberfest gives Oktoberfest a coastal spin at Water Street Market with German food, live music and festive competitions.

Come November, Día de los Muertos fills downtown with music, art, food, ofrendas and colorful traditions honoring loved ones who have passed.

Round out the year in December with Merry Days by the Bay, featuring boat parades, holiday lights, decorated trees and seasonal celebrations along the downtown waterfront.
