Last week, we told you about the great shows that the ZACH theatre has in store, but we couldn’t neglect the amazing lineup that Lexus Broadway in Austin presented by Texas Performing Arts has in store for their 2016-2017 Season, which is filled with Austin premieres, new and award-winning titles and Broadway favorites. This will be a season that offers a great mix of new, classic, and family-friendly Broadway productions. Here’s a look at what’s in store.

Disney’s Newsies

September 27 – October 2, 2016

They delivered the papers, until they made the headlines…Direct from Broadway comes Newsies, the smash-hit, crowd-pleasing musical from Disney. Winner of the 2012 Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Choreography, Newsies has audiences and critics alike calling it “a musical woth singing about!” (The New York Times). Filled with one heart-pounding number after another, it’s a high-energy explosion of song and dance you just don’t want to miss. We’re excited to see what they have in store for audiences with this show, and it’s definitely setting the bar high for the rest of the season. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. The Phantom of The Opera

Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of The Opera will come to Austin as part of a brand new North American tour. Critics are raving that this breathtaking production is “bigger and better than ever before” and features a brilliant new scenic design by Paul Brown, Tony Award®-winning original costume design by Maria Björnson, lighting design by Tony Award®-winner Paule Constable, new choreography by Scott Ambler, and new staging by director Laurence Connor. The production, overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh, boasts many exciting special effects including the show’s legendary chandelier. The beloved story and thrilling score – with songs like “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask Of You,” and “Masquerade” – will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this one of the largest productions now on tour.

Something Rotten!

May 30 – June 4, 2017

Something Rotten! is “Broadway’s big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in 1595, this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers who are desperate to write a hit play. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical! With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! is “The Producers + The Book of Mormon x The Drowsy Chaperone. Squared!” (New York Magazine).
