One of the fastest growing comic conventions in a flourishing field is Fan Expo Dallas, currently the largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event in Texas. Big D’s fan favorite is also the fastest growing such convention behind Comic Con San Diego.

Fans come from all over to get autographs, take pictures with their favorite stars, and even cosplay (short-hand for essentially dressing in costume) as their favorite characters. The 2019 Fan Expo Dallas May 3-5 featured a reunion of the cast of “Back to the Future,” including Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Patric were on hand to tell stories from their respective careers and also share memories from the filming of the ‘80s vampire movie “Lost Boys.” One story involved Sutherland trying to impress a girl by popping a wheelie on the motorcycle he was riding–which didn’t end well for the errant star, also known for his longtime leading role in “24.”

While Comic Cons are often known for their superheros and villainous characters, Fan Expo Dallas has once again added credence to the expression, “Everything’s bigger in Texas.” Opening the event to actors from blockbuster hit movies which have been entertaining audiences for many years, this conference has broadened its fan base and cast of characters. Who says the parents can’t have as much fun as the kids? Fan Expo Dallas invites multiple generations to the party, and that’s something to talk about on the long ride home.

At Fan Expo Dallas, fans can get autographs and say hello to their favorite stars of television, movies and even anime. This year’s event featured the cast of “Back to the Future. “Mark Sheppard of “Supernatural” and Khary Payton from AMC’s “Walking Dead” were also on hand to greet fans. Unfortunately, Peter Mayhew, best known for his portrayal of Chewbacca from “Star Wars” died just days before the event. Fans left messages of remembrance at his booth. Photo Brian Maass
