Embracing Texas Heritage in Music

“Growing up in San Antonio is something special,” says Destiny. “I feel like it is the true city that entails the fusion of Mexican and Texan culture. Apart from music always having such a presence in the city with festivals and city events, I grew up when San Antonio was the hot spot for Tejano music. It was just something I always knew was part of where I come from.”

A Lasting Family Legacy

Destiny’s connection to Tejano music runs deep, thanks to her family heritage. With a father, Raulito Navaira, and an uncle, Emilio Navaira, who are both celebrated icons in the Tejano scene, she describes her upbringing as both a privilege and a responsibility. “I was privileged to have learned from these Tejano icons in many ways. But the main two are obviously through their careers and the who they were behind the music. I was always aware they were something special, what they did was something that people craved, but they always showed us (my brother, sister and cousins) that it was hard work and that the people were most important. The passion they had for music and their fans is what I carry the closest to my heart. I was able to see them reach goals I can only hope to reach and with so many distractions and obstacles today in the industry. I am so grateful that it was embedded in me at such a young age.”

First Brush with Songwriting

Just a junior in high school, Destiny penned her first song, Mi Vida (My Life), a poignant experience where she co-wrote with her father. The song draws inspiration from themes of grace, second chances and familial bonds, showcasing her ability to weave personal stories into her music. “So, Mi Vida started with a song my dad was writing, and I was a junior in high school just dabbling in songwriting. I asked if I could see him write the song and to my surprise I had ideas too (in English of course). The inspiration for that song was about the grace of God and the fact that he saved my dad and uncle from an automobile accident that he had spared their lives, as well as just the fact that my father and I have such a strong relationship.”

Evolving Into a Solo Artist

Transitioning from the band, Remedio, to a solo career was a significant step for Destiny. Emerging from a personal heartbreak, she felt the need to express herself independently. “It was time for me to spread my wings,” she recalls, acknowledging the fear and excitement accompanying this life change. Prepared for this new chapter, Destiny focused on crafting her music while simultaneously establishing herself in the industry, determined to thrive as a solo artist. 

“At the time I was going through a lot of changes.I had just experienced a major heartbreak and had been turning to music to get through it,” says Destiny. “We had been doing so well on the road as Remedio, but I just felt like it was time for me to spread my wings as cliche as that sounds; it’s how I felt. I was sure to get my music ready and found people interested in my project so that I would be able to have music videos, appearances and a full record not just saying I would go solo. It was a big decision, and I honestly was scared but knew it was time. I always knew I wanted to take this path since I was a little girl.” 

Bridging Borders: Texas and Monterrey

Destiny’s move to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, aimed to expand her influence in the Tejano music scene, and while it posed challenges, it also represented growth. “The biggest adjustments were not having my family there,” she recalls, emphasizing the importance of family ties. Despite the changes, her connection to Texas remained strong, supported by familiar comforts like HEB grocery stores, which made her feel at home.

“The move to Monterrey may have seemed out of nowhere, but since 2016 I had been going at least three times a year to visit. It changed for sure, but I think being with my brother was what made it easier. Monterrey also has HEB so that made it feel a little more like home. I think the biggest adjustments were not having my family there with me and just learning the true lifestyle of the people who lived there. What kept me was the love I felt for my family.” 

Infusing Cultural Heritage into Music

Destiny’s music distinctly reflects her Texas upbringing. She draws heavily from the Tejano and country influences of her childhood, imbuing her lyrics with poetic storytelling and themes of love. “Texas has definitely played a big role in what I put into my music,” she states, hinting at the variety of styles that characterize her second record entitled, Dime Cómo Se Siente (Tell Me, How Does It Feel?). “I think from the heavy Tejano and country influence I grew up with, it affects my lyrics. I love poetic lyrics and songs with stories and about love. I think my second record really entails the different styles I love.”  

Achievements and Recognition

Amid her burgeoning career, Destiny has garnered critical acclaim and awards, including a Latin Grammy nomination. They symbolize the hard work and dedication of those who influenced her journey, reinforcing her belief that she is on the right track.

“I think awards are great, and I am very grateful for each one I’ve won and been nominated for. As far as my journey goes, I think it celebrates all of the great people and ideas that have made me who I am as an artist. It has definitely been a fun experience going to these awards. Personally, it’s kind of more reassurance for me that I’m on the right track. I love to win, but it’s more about the fact that I’m able to be in the categories nominated and a winner as some of my idols.”

Inspiring Future Generations

As a prominent female figure in a male-dominated genre, Destiny seeks to empower young women aspiring to enter the music industry. Her advice is simple, yet profound: “To the young girls who want to start doing this, the most important piece of advice I have is be yourself. It is so important especially in Tejano to not compare yourself, to not try to do what’s been done exactly how it was done. I also think another thing is being able to be realistic with yourself. Challenge yourself when it comes to your talent, but don’t let go of your strengths just to sound like someone else.” 

Collaborative Spirit

Collaboration has been essential in Destiny’s artistry. Working with respected musicians in the regional Mexican genre, she sees it as a way to share and celebrate talent. “A collaboration is all about sharing talent,” she explains, emphasizing the importance of genuine connections and mutual admiration among artists.”I have been so blessed to have collaborated with many people on some very important projects. To me a collaboration is all about sharing talent, and I feel that with every one I’ve done I want my colleagues to shine in what they do best. I honestly look for someone I have some kind of connection to and well, quite honestly, a talent I admire.” 

Reconnecting with Texas

Destiny cherishes her memories of Texas, recalling the many experiences of performing at various venues throughout the state. Currently back in San Antonio for a tour, she expresses her excitement about upcoming performances, including participation in the renowned SXSW event in Austin (March 7-15, 2025).
