EmmaRain, can you tell us about your character, Willow? What do you love most about her and why?

Willow is really sweet and brave. Even though she doesn’t talk for most of the movie, she still shows so much love. I love that she never gives up, even when things are hard.

You learned sign language for this role. How was that experience for you?

It was fun! At first it was tricky, but then I got better and better. My favorite sign is “love” because it’s like hugging your heart with your hands.

What is it like to work with your dad on this film? Do you think it changes how you approach your role?

It’s fun working with Daddy! He helps me a lot and always tells me when I do something really good. Sometimes he gets teary eyed watching me, which makes me feel like the story is really good.

You spent a lot of time with actress Alexis Arnold on set, who plays your mentor, Tara. How has your friendship with her helped you in your role as Willow?

She’s so nice! She helped me feel calm when we were filming hard scenes. She feels like a big sister and made it easier for me to pretend and be Willow. I really look up to her.

In the film, Willow has a special moment where she finds her voice. What does that mean to you personally, and how did you prepare for that scene?

It was a big moment! I practiced it a lot. When I finally spoke in that scene, it felt like something magical was happening. I just thought about being really happy and brave like Willow.

Do you have a favorite scene or moment from The Sound of Willow that you can share with us? What makes it special to you?

My favorite scene is the fire engine scene with the big trucks. Everyone was clapping and the lights were pretty. I loved pulling the rope and having the loud horn go off!

This film touches on some heavy themes like illness and resilience. How do you feel when acting in emotional scenes, and how do you get into character?

Sometimes I feel a little sad, but I remember that I’m telling someone’s story. I take a deep breath and think about how Willow would feel, and then I just try my best.

Having been in seven other films and where you have won awards, do you have any advice for other kids who want to be actors like you?

Yes! Just be yourself and try your best. Don’t be scared to be a little silly in practice. And always listen to your director—even if it’s your dad!

What do you want to do next? Are there specific roles or types of stories you hope to explore as you continue acting?

I want to be in a movie where I get to fly—or maybe one with magical animals! I like stories that have happy endings and magic in them. My favorite thing is action. I have been practicing flips.

Since The Sound of Willow is a Christmas film, how do you celebrate the holiday season, and what does Christmas mean to you?

I love Christmas! We decorate the tree, sing songs and drink hot cocoa. Christmas means love and spending time with my family—and believing that special things can happen.
