Introduction

“Before relocating eight years ago, from California to Texas,” says Jessica, “I spent a decade immersed in the vibrant entertainment scene of Los Angeles. The experiences I gathered during that time are etched in my memory and continue to inspire my life as an actress and a mother. Now in Houston, I have embraced new opportunities while continuing my passion for acting, all while introducing my daughter Zarah, 7, to the world of performance.”

Early Beginnings: A Performer’s Heart

“From the moment I entered the world, singing and dancing were second nature. I first took the stage at the tender age of three and quickly became a fixture in numerous musicals throughout Southern California. My early talent caught the attention of a renowned Hollywood agent and manager, leading to countless auditions, modeling opportunities, and the thrill of being a child performer.

“Participating in various talent competitions and shows, I accumulated a bounty of trophies and fond memories. Performances were not limited to my childhood, though; I continued to engage in musical theater throughout my college years and into adulthood. I love to sing and perform on stage and help with production. Currently, I’m helping to produce some films.”

College Life: Science Meets Art

College was where Jessica was able to mix her passion for science and the arts. “I attended the University of Southern California, where I majored in neuroscience and minored in musical theater – a unique combination that reflected my diverse interests. While studying the complexities of the human mind, I continued to act, harnessing my artistic talents alongside my academic passions.

“During my decade in Los Angeles, I became a professional actress, booking roles in successful television shows such as ‘Mad Men,’ ‘Desperate Housewives,’ and ‘CSI New York’. The experiences on set were invaluable lessons in teamwork and creativity, characterized by the continuous joy, challenges, and camaraderie shared among cast and crew.”

Cherished Memories in Hollywood

“Working on major productions was not just about the roles I portrayed but the relationships I built,” continues Jessica. “Those wrap parties where we celebrated together stand out as some of my fondest memories. Spending time with talented directors, producers, and A-list celebrities was an incredible opportunity, and I treasure those late-night discussions and laughter with my colleagues.

“My daughter, Zarah, is following in my footsteps, and it’s a joy to share these experiences with her. At just seven years old, she is incredibly talented, booking projects alongside me and thriving as a solo performer. I beam with pride as I watch her explore acting and immerse herself in creative storytelling.”

A Role Model: Henry Winkler

“One of the most influential figures in my life has been actor Henry Winkler. His kindness and passion for storytelling left a lasting impact on me. I had the privilege of attending his talks at USC and later working with him on the TV show ‘Childrens Hospital’. Our conversations helped shape my understanding of the industry. I vividly recall my mother’s question about achieving fame and how his answer – tenacity – became a guiding word for me.”

Balancing Act: Sports and Performance

“While acting has always been my foremost passion, I also pursued athletics, especially softball during middle and high school. My teams achieved remarkable milestones, placing in state and national tournaments. Though my path led me to performance, I remained committed to fitness.

“A few years ago, I discovered tennis, quickly becoming enamored with the competition. The determination I gained from my sports background, coupled with Henry Winkler’s lesson in tenacity, fuels my approach to my acting career.”

Life in Houston

“Despite my deep connection to Los Angeles, moving to Houston was a welcoming change for my family. The city boasts a diverse culture and offers families an enriching environment. We appreciate our neighborhood and are grateful for the school our children attend. Houston’s culinary scene, influenced by its international community, is one of the city’s best features, offering a delightful array of authentic cuisines.

“The warm weather can be challenging, but we take advantage of its beautiful nature trails and occasional beach outings in nearby Galveston. Overall, Houston is a much more convenient place to live compared to LA.”

The Evolving Entertainment Scene in Texas

“The entertainment industry is blooming in Texas, presenting exciting opportunities for performers like me. With the ability to work as a local hire in Atlanta or Los Angeles, I remain hopeful about the growth of the industry in Texas. I actively support initiatives aimed at enhancing the local entertainment landscape, engaging with writers, producers, and directors to foster an inclusive community.

“To further promote the industry here, I’ve launched Film People Meet Ups. These gatherings have been a huge success, bringing together creatives from diverse backgrounds. I enjoy the collaborative spirit and sense of community that forms during these events.

“Beyond networking, I have worked as a script consultant and producer on various projects in Texas. One significant difference between Texas and LA is the opportunity to wear multiple hats creatively, allowing for a broader exploration of artistry.

“I also support parents navigating their children’s entry into the film and television industry, helping them understand the process and preparing them for auditions. This past summer, Zarah and I had the pleasure of filming a movie together, reinforcing the notion that the creative journey is most meaningful when shared.”

Embracing Complex Roles

“In my acting career, I gravitate toward layered characters that reflect the complexities of real life. While I have often been cast as the classic Cinderella type, I relish roles that challenge me more, such as the complicated characters in ‘Grease’s’ Rizzo or ‘Cinderella’s’ stepsisters – roles that allow for depth and complexity.”

The Harsh Realities of Acting

“However, a career in acting is never without its challenges. The constant struggle for work can be disheartening,” says Jessica, upon her reflection. “Rejection is an integral part of the journey, and it requires perseverance and resilience to continue pursuing this passion. Each opportunity is fleeting and can vanish as quickly as it arises, making tenacity and dedication crucial traits for survival in this industry.

“My professor at USC, Joseph Hacker, always said, ‘It is impossible, but there’s one million ways.’ Every path to success in acting is unique; what is vital is building connections and nurturing relationships with like-minded creatives. Magic often happens when people collaborate with shared goals.”

The Craft of Acting

“Acting transcends fame; it is about the artistry involved in the creative process. Continuous learning is imperative in this profession, and greatness comes through practice. Being present – showing up and saying yes to opportunities – unlocks doors to unforeseen possibilities.

“My journey through the worlds of performance, motherhood, and personal growth has been rich and varied. From the stages of Southern California to the evolving landscape of Houston, I remain dedicated to my craft. As I support my daughter in her artistic pursuits, I find strength and inspiration in nurturing her passion. Together, we venture into the captivating world of performance, eagerly embracing the challenges and joys that lie ahead. Through tenacity and a commitment to creativity, I believe we can make a significant impact in the arts – one role, one connection, and one project at a time.”
