There’s a new podcast launching Sept. 6, hosted by SHEROES’ Carmel Holt called “The Road to Joni” — a podcast honoring Joni Mitchell, where Carmel will interview star guests (including St. Vincent, Brittany Howard, Hozier, Arooj Aftab, Bonnie Raitt and many more) and chat about all things Joni!

Carmel is taping the episodes as she makes her way on a cross-country trip from Kingston, NY to the “Joni Jam” happening at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 19-20.  Along the way, she’ll be stopping in various cities for events, tapings, and on-air visits to local NPR stations.  As part of the trip she will be stopping in Austin on Sept. 27 – 30. “The Road To Joni” will air on all 21 SHEROES public radio affiliates across the country and will be released as a podcast, distributed by the Talkhouse Podcast Network, available everywhere.

#3 Faye Webster

You don’t want to miss Faye Webster’s show at Moody Amphitheater on Sept. 19. Her newest album, “Underdressed at the Symphony,” came out earlier this year to critical acclaim.

Since the release of her last full length, Faye Webster has experienced a phenomenal surge in audience brought on by TikTok and the viral popularity of her songs “Kingston” and “I Know You.” Her fan’s profound connection to her music feels all the more genuine given Faye herself is not on the platform. In the last year her Spotify streams have increased 1100% and she experienced a nearly 3000% growth in her YouTube views. Faye’s Spotify monthly listeners have ballooned to over 7 million and that success has spilled over into her touring business as well. Last fall, she set out on a major US headlining tour with every single show selling out immediately and multiple nights being added in major markets. The energy around Webster is palpable – fans singing every word to every song and cell phones in the air, documenting every moment of her shows.

#4 Parker Woodland

Austin-based trio Parker Woodland have their first full-length album, “There’s No Such Thing As Time” coming out Sept. 6. The new album expresses the band’s musical evolution over the years, taking their punk edge and mixing in a high-energy sound you can feel as you listen to each emotionally charged anthem written for the modern world.

To celebrate the album release, Parker Woodland will be performing at Waterloo Records in-store the same day of the release, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. Later on that same evening, the band will play an album release show at Mohawk Indoors alongside Tim Kile (formerly of Arcade Fire), Jammy Violet (of Pelvis Wrestley) and Christian Kyle (of Schatzi) starting at 8 p.m. Also, in honor of the band’s album release and their commitment to the Austinmusic scene, Austin City Council will be making a proclamation at City Hall Sept. 12 announcing Parker Woodland Day.

#5 Marika Hackman

Marika Hackman is making her long-awaited return to the States for the first time in 5 years! She’s heading out on the road in support of her new record Big Sigh and will be playing in Austin on Sept 17.

The queer UK-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Marika Hackman released her critically acclaimed album Big Sigh earlier this year on Chrysalis and it’s an absolute stunner. This album was the ‘hardest record’ she’s ever made and her first in four years— a result of isolation and lockdown leaving her stifled creatively, Marika had a hard time getting back to songcraft. But this record is an impressive feat, after a hard-fought journey back from her creative dry spell. She co-produced the entire album with Sam Petts-Davies [Thom Yorke, Warpaint] and long-term collaborator Charlie Andrew (Alt-J) and also performed every element of the record, save for the brass and strings. Big Sigh finds Marika venturing into fresh terrain, with a constant tug between organic instrumentation and the harsher dynamics of synthetic distortion.
