Shakespeare Dallas’ beloved Shakespeare in the Park series continues this summer with “Alice in Wonderland,” an imaginative take on Lewis Carroll’s classic tale.

At the Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre, Shakespeare Dallas presents “Alice in Wonderland,” directed by Natalie Young. The classic tale follows Alice as she tumbles down a rabbit hole into the whimsical world of Wonderland, where curious characters, unexpected adventures and nonsensical logic await around every corner.

Opening Night in Wonderland

Opening night drew a strong crowd, with attendees settling into lawn chairs and blankets, refreshments in hand, as they anticipated an evening of outdoor theater. One of the production’s strongest elements was its musical performances, which helped maintain the show’s energy throughout the evening. The actors’ delivery, timing and overall talent stood out and added depth to the story. The cast approached the material with enthusiasm and heart, embracing the playful absurdity that has captured imaginations for generations.

At the center of the story is Lily Gast as Alice. Gast remains faithful to the spirit of the iconic character, capturing Alice’s curiosity, inquisitiveness and determination as she journeys through Wonderland. Her performance provides a steady anchor amid the production’s many larger-than-life personalities.

The production’s costume design was another highlight, particularly the imaginative animal characters that helped bring Wonderland’s eccentric world to life. Among them, the Mouse delivered one of the evening’s standout performances, with a costume and characterization that complemented the actor’s energetic personality.

Audience members responded warmly throughout the show, laughing at the production’s witty dialogue and playful humor. The lighthearted storytelling makes the production an enjoyable outing for families, theater lovers and anyone looking to experience a fresh take on a literary classic.

There is something uniquely special about the Shakespeare in the Park experience. Guests arrive with picnic dinners, lawn chairs and blankets, gathering beneath the summer sky to enjoy an evening of live theater alongside fellow arts enthusiasts. The communal atmosphere creates a shared appreciation for storytelling and performance that adds to the overall experience.

Food, wine and beer are permitted inside the amphitheater, allowing guests to create their own picnic-style evening, though hard liquor is prohibited. For those bringing taller chairs, seating is reserved toward the back of the amphitheater to preserve sightlines for other guests.

Choosing where to sit can shape the experience. Sitting closer to the stage provides a more intimate view of the performers and dialogue, while seats farther back offer a broader perspective of the production framed against the darkening evening sky. As the performance progresses, daylight gradually gives way to darkness, creating a natural shift in mood and energy that becomes part of the show itself.

The venue is also well-equipped for a comfortable evening outdoors. Restrooms are located a short walk from the seating area, and on opening night, a food truck selling frozen yogurt offered guests a sweet treat before and during the performance.

For more than 50 years, Shakespeare in the Park has remained a cherished Dallas tradition, bringing together theater lovers, families and arts enthusiasts for an evening of storytelling, artistic expression and community beneath the Texas sky.
