On June 1, 1954, Congress changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day, “in order that a grateful Nation might pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this Nation.” Many Americans and companies have since paid in their own way, from offering veteran discounts to organizing wreath laying events.
