Embossed license plates are now back in Texas.
My Plates, the official specialty license plate vendor for the Texas DMV, launched their “Premium Embossed Plates” on Aug. 13. Texans can now purchase customized embossed plates for the first time since 2009. They are available in three color combinations – black & yellow, blue & gold, and black & gold – with raised lettering.
“Since 2009, when the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles entrusted us with designing and selling specialty license plates, we’ve been the go-to destination for Texans wanting to make their vehicles stand out,” said Steve Farrar, CEO of My Plates. “Whether you’re passionate about Texas’ rich culture, rooting for your favorite college or sports team, or showing support for causes close to your heart, we’ve got a plate for you. From the iconic Texas flag to plates that give back to state organizations like Texas Parks & Wildlife, My Plates is where creativity meets the open road.” In 2009, the State of Texas switched their plates into flat digitally printed plates taking away from the unique characterization. The launch of these embossed plates opens up options for people to utilize plates in a fun way.
Benefits of Customization
Farrar explains why the premium embossed plates are in high demand, “Picture this, a time when license plates had depth, character, and a tactile presence that you could actually feel. That’s what Texans were missing when the state switched to flat, digitally printed plates in 2009. Fast forward to 2022, when we asked Texans if they’d be interested in bringing back the embossed plates of yesteryear, and the response was overwhelming. Over 2,000 people raised their hands and said, ‘Yes, please!’
“These Premium License Plates aren’t just about nostalgia—they’re about standing out. We’ve rolled out three designs so far, with more on the way, each crafted to add a touch of elegance and individuality to your vehicle,” he said. The general benefits in having an embossed license plate include giving Texans the creativity to express themselves “while helping the state thrive,” he adds. He also feels it’s a nod to history and a badge of honor that Texans get to customize their vehicles while boosting the state’s economy.
“Think of these plates as the tailored suits of the license plate world,” said Farrar. My Plates also has a specialty plate category which began during the early 1990s, and has over 500 designs to choose from including those celebrating military service. Farrar wants everyone to know how special choosing a design can be. “When choosing a specialty plate, you’re crafting a unique expression of your lifestyle. Whether you go for a random letter and number combo or personalize it with up to seven characters, your plate is a reflection of you. And with options to purchase for 1, 3, or 5 years, you can commit for as long as you like. From cars to motorcycles, and even trailers, we’ve got a plate for every vehicle in your household, all while saving you money with our multi-year discounts,” he said. Since 2009, My Plates has generated over $190 million in revenue for the State of Texas. When Texans purchase a plate they are essentially supporting the community as well.
