Laundry day just got a serious upgrade. Meet NoScrubs, the lightning-fast, on-demand laundry service transforming the way Texans tackle their wash.

Operating in Austin, DFW, and Houston—and rapidly expanding—NoScrubs will pick up your laundry, wash it, fold it, and return it in as little as four hours. That’s a game-changer compared to the typical turnaround offered by other same-day services. It is designed to save both time and money for busy professionals, parents, and anyone ready to reclaim their weekends.

At the helm is Matt O’Connor, a name Austin tech insiders already know well. Before co-founding NoScrubs, O’Connor launched Instacart in Austin, helping to revolutionize grocery delivery. Now he’s bringing that same innovative spark to the laundry industry, creating not only a time-saving service for customers but also a thriving opportunity for gig workers—known as Scrubbers—who can earn $3,000 to $4,000 a month without the headaches of rideshare or food delivery work. Texas Lifestyle Magazine had the opportunity to talk with O’Connor about how NoScrubs is shaking up the laundry game and why the company is poised to become Texas’s next big convenience revolution.

Tell us about NoScrubs. Where did the idea come from?

The idea for NoScrubs came from a frustratingly slow (four day turnaround!) and expensive ($50+ for a load of laundry) process using another service. Having worked at Instacart, I saw what a massive difference same day delivery meant to customers. We figured out the structure to allow for the fastest, most affordable laundry delivery service possible and that’s how NoScrubs was born. We launched in Austin in May 2024 and have since expanded to Houston and DFW, with national expansion imminent.

You helped launch Instacart in Austin. What lessons from that experience have shaped how you’re building and scaling NoScrubs?

In addition to launching Austin for Instacart, I returned later to build the profitability playbook. Both experiences showed how much people love convenience. While both Instacart and NoScrubs are delivery companies, we’re also both selling the only thing you can’t make more oftime. The average person spends 2-3 years of their life doing laundry! NoScrubs is fixing that.

You’ve gone from groceries to laundry—what’s the common thread that excites you about transforming everyday errands?

The most fulfilling thing is hearing from customers whose lives have been genuinely benefitted by NoScrubs. Some examples of those are people who are physically incapable of doing laundry because of an injury or a medical condition. Those are rarer examples, but it also feels pretty great hearing from regular moms that NoScrubs has helped them keep their sanity by taking laundry off their plate.

NoScrubs promises a turnaround time as fast as four hours, which is unusually fast in laundry services. What operational or tech innovations make that possible?

Our record from the customer placing an order to delivery is actually two hours flat, and many orders are delivered between 2-4 hours. We partner with laundry locations that are usually no more than 1-4 miles from any customer. That means that the order is started as soon as five minutes after being picked up, hence the rapid turnaround time.

How does NoScrubs’s model create a better experience and income opportunity for your “Scrubbers”?

There are a few ways the model helps scrubbers. 1) By minimizing driving, their time, gas costs, and vehicle wear and tear are minimized. 2) Scrubbers can claim orders anytime that works for themso if they have extra free time or an unpredictable schedule, NoScrubs is perfect to slot into those windows. 3) Lastly, Scrubbers don’t need to have strangers in their car or drive 100% of the time like almost every other gig option.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about people’s laundry preferences since starting NoScrubs?

Learning that some people have strong aversions to any scents. I naively thought that everyone liked a scent in their laundry. The good thing about NoScrubs is we use unscented products by default and customers can specify and use any materials they’d like on their order.

If we peeked at your own laundry habits before NoScrubs, would we find a perfectly folded drawer… or a “mountain of clean clothes” situation?

Much more towards the latter. I hated doing laundry and frankly wasn’t good at it. Of course I’ve now learned every trick in the book and can even fold the notorious fitted sheet!

When you’re not thinking about work, how do you recharge and step away from the hustle?

Mostly I like hanging out with my wife, Cass. Barton Springs is an obvious gem we like to spend time at.
