Defensive Driving: Your Best (as good as they can be) Options

There are a million amazing things about our great state of Texas, but I think we’d all agree on one negative aspect…speeding traps. Small towns, backroads, I-35—it doesn’t seem to matter where you go, there’s always someone getting pulled over for speeding. And yes, this has been me once or twice.

The jumping-through-hoops process of paying for your ticket without losing an arm, a leg and your first-born child is daunting, to say the least. You could just bite the bullet and pay the ticket in its entirety — but then it doesn’t get excused from your record. Defensive driving isn’t so bad, it just takes a bit of your time. If you’re going to waste a Saturday learning about the rules of braking and blinkers, you might as well choose the best defensive driving class in the area, right? Here are some that soften the blow of the money and time you’re losing (because of the time you were saving by speeding):

Comedy Defensive Driving

It’s all one big joke. I’d prefer any type of learning with a side of laughter and sarcasm, so this was perfect for me. I did the online version—lots of short videos that you have to click through with a few multiple choice questions in between and a test at the end. They also have plenty of in-person classes held at various locations, hosted by a real comedian (not Aziz Ansari or Amy Schumer, but c’mon). I’m not going to say I was laughing out loud…I mean, they still have to go over the facts, but it was definitely more interesting to listen to (because let’s face it, you’ll be multi-tasking the whole time—who actually watches the videos every second?) than the typical class. I liked the short video format as well—it seemed like a much faster progression than it actually was. Funny Bone and Happy Time are two other companies here in Texas with the same concept.

Texas Friendly DDS

For the foodies out there. If you’d prefer your defensive driving more straight forward AND an included meal sounds up your alley, this is the course for you. Interact with the instructor and other speed racers while you all dine at IHOP, Denny’s, Mr. Gatti’s, or Austin Pizza Garden. Yum.

Cap City

Sucker for free stuff? I am. If you attend defensive driving at Cap City Comedy, you get the jokes and laid-back atmosphere plus two free tickets to a Cap City Comedy show (a $30 value). Pretty cool! To attend a class, just arrive at the club before 9AM with your drivers license and a pen and paper. You will also need to know the name of the court that issued your ticket.

Austin Driving School

For the busy! Don’t have an entire Saturday to give? ADS provides shorter classes that you can attend twice, after work (6PM-9PM). State approved courses for teen drive’s education, adult driver’s education, and defensive driving for ticket dismissal and insurance discounts. The courses can be taken over the internet any time you are ready. Start and pause at any time as often as you like until your course is complete at your own pace and in the comfort of your home.

Alright, that’s all I got fellow law-abiders! Be careful, slow down, invest in a police scanner…do what you gotta do—but definitely find the right defensive driving class when you need to!
