Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas will host its annual gala, “Wishes Under the Stars,” on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Rosenberg Skyroom at The University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. The evening will feature a cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, wish granting, silent & live auctions, and a program filled with hope, strength, and joy. Stories told throughout the evening will educate the community how the hope a wish provides can be transformational and can even have the power to help children overcome their illness.
Last year’s gala was a huge success! Auctioneer Rick Shaw led a thrilling live auction of top-of-the-line experiences and items, with packages being outbid left and right. To top off the night, The Royal Dukes played everyone’s favorite songs at the after party—everyone was moving and grooving on the dance floor!
Guests also enjoyed a beautiful multi-course dinner while listening to impactful stories from wish kids past, present, and future. Each story was an incredible example of the true power that a wish can hold for a child battling a critical illness. One of the highlights of the evening was the wish reveal for Kalynn, who was granted her wish to go to New York Fashion Week. When Make-A-Wish revealed the news at the event that her wish would be granted, Kalynn was so excited and couldn’t wait to board the plane to New York. She took her trip this past year and went to the Ulla Johnson Fashion Show at the Brooklyn Museum, had a Veronica Beard Styling Session, a Tory Burch Shopping Experience, and watched multiple fashion shows. She also did some other classic New York tourist activities!
Since 1984, Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas has granted more than 5,500 life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. Last fiscal year, Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas granted 242 wishes to children in the region. This year, they are on track to grant over 300 wishes, with over 100 of those wishes being granted this summer. With more wishes waiting, Make-A-Wish invites the community to join them at this year’s gala to give wish kids hope for a better tomorrow and to change lives one wish at a time.
This year’s gala chairs are Monroe and Jeri May. The Mays have a very personal connection to Make-A-Wish. In 2008, their child, Mackenzie, was granted a wish to go to Disney World. The Mays have continued their support of Make-A-Wish and Monroe is now the Chair of Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas’ San Antonio Regional Council, and he and Jeri are active volunteers for the mission. They will be sharing their daughter’s story at this year’s gala.
