Holiday traditions, twinkling lights, and live music create an unforgettable season both above and below ground.
As the holiday season approaches, Natural Bridge Caverns in San Antonio, Texas, transforms into a winter wonderland like no other. Known for its breathtaking underground formations, this renowned natural landmark brings Christmas alive with its annual Christmas at the Caverns event. Kicking off on December 7 and running through December 23, the celebration is packed with unique holiday traditions designed to delight families, adventurers, and anyone looking for a fresh way to experience the season’s magic.
This year, the festivities are more enchanting than ever. From the beloved Caroling in the Cavern live music to the twinkling lights of the Trail of Lights, every corner of Natural Bridge Caverns radiates holiday cheer. “Each year, we look for ways to make our Christmas event a big part of celebrating the magic of the season,” says Brad Wuest, President of Natural Bridge Caverns. “We’re blessed to offer our guests a unique experience that combines the beauty of the cavern with the joyful sounds of talented musicians from across our community.”
Caroling and Live Concerts Below Ground
There is no question that centerpiece of Christmas at the Caverns is the Caroling in the Cavern, a live music caroling experience set within the naturally acoustical chambers of Discovery Cavern. Local and regional performers fill the air with traditional holiday tunes, their voices enhanced by the incredible acoustics of ancient massive rooms filled with stunning formations. Performances range from bell ringers and choirs to talented contemporary soloists and madrigal groups. Given Caroling in the Caverns’ popularity, it’s highly recommended you book tickets early to ensure you and your family don’t miss this magical experience.
For those looking for a more concert like musical experience, December 20 marks a special performance by Grammy-nominated artist Jeremy McComb. Known for his storytelling and heartfelt music, McComb will perform a 90-minute live concert underground in the state’s deepest venue: the Ballroom. Only 200 tickets are available for this unique experience with full concert seating, beverages, and a meet and greet post concert. Concert attendees are also treated not only to McComb’s music but also to all the above-ground activities included with their ticket, making it a festive outing from start to finish.
The Magical Trail of Lights
The Christmas spirit doesn’t stop below ground. Outside, the Trail of Lights offers a captivating walk through festively lit holiday scenes and character displays. Hundreds of illuminated live oaks line the trail, casting a glow on Discovery Village, where a towering 30-foot Christmas tree stands at the journey’s end. Families stroll through this enchanted landscape, taking in the music, lights, and a cozy atmosphere that welcomes both the young and the young-at-heart.
Holiday Activities for All Ages
Back in Discovery Village, Christmas at the Caverns offers a variety of activities for families to enjoy. Kids can put their skills to the test in the Reindeer Round-Up Maze, where they’ll search for Santa’s missing reindeer. The synthetic skating rink allows little ones to glide into the season, and the new, expanded s’mores campfire area provides a perfect spot to gather and relax after an evening full of activities.
Story Time with Mrs. Claus, hay mazes, and interactive games make Discovery Village an engaging place for families to connect with the holiday spirit. A visit with Santa Claus (complete with souvenir photo) rounds out the experience, creating memories that kids will treasure long after the decorations are put away.
Holiday dining options make sure there’s plenty of fuel for the whole night through including hot chocolate and the ever popular brisket sandwiches and pizza.
Giving Back to the Community
Natural Bridge Caverns continues its tradition of supporting the San Antonio and New Braunfels Food Banks during the Christmas season. Since launching its community food drive, the site has helped contribute over 1.45 million pounds of food for families in need. Guests who bring a non-perishable food item will receive a free s’more kit as a thank-you for their generosity.
In addition to food donations, visitors can opt to “Round Up for Hunger” by adding a small donation to their ticket purchase. This initiative makes it easy for attendees to contribute to a worthy cause while enjoying the holiday festivities.
