Detox Your Skincare: Why Switching to Edible Beauty is the Healthier Choice for Radiant Skin

As a naturopath, I’ve always believed that true beauty comes from within, and that belief extends to the products we use on our skin. Many of us pay close attention to what we eat and drink, yet we’re often less aware of what we put on our skin. Did you know that the average woman applies over 500 synthetic chemicals to her body every single day? Startling, right? Even more shocking is the fact that our skin, the largest organ of our body, absorbs up to 60% of what we apply to it. This means that many of these chemicals are making their way into our bloodstream, potentially contributing to a wide range of health issues.

I created Edible Beauty Australia out of a desire to provide people with luxurious skincare that is free from harmful ingredients —products that are so pure you could eat them (though I wouldn’t recommend it!). We believe that what you put on your skin should be as safe as what you put in your mouth. This philosophy has led us to create products that are not only effective but also completely free of synthetic chemicals and endocrine-disrupting chemicals – without compromising gon efficacy.

Why You Should Switch to “Edible” Skincare

Think about your skincare routine. How many products do you apply daily? From cleansers to moisturizers to serums, we can easily accumulate layers of product. While each product may seem harmless on its own, together they can create a toxic cocktail that burdens your skin and your overall health.

Our skin acts as a protective barrier, but it’s also permeable. In fact, many of the substances we apply topically are absorbed into our bloodstream. For example, studies have shown that parabens, a common preservative in skincare and cosmetics, have been detected in breast cancer tumours . This is just one example of how the chemicals in our beauty products can impact our health.

I realized early on in my naturopathy career that my clients, many of whom were women struggling with fertility issues or autoimmune diseases, needed skincare that didn’t contribute to their toxic load. That’s why I developed Edible Beauty—a skincare line made with only the purest, most natural ingredients. Every product we create is free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, among other harmful chemicals.

The Hidden Dangers in Mainstream Skincare

Many mainstream skincare products contain chemicals that, over time, can accumulate in your body and contribute to long-term health problems. Even products marketed as natural can have ingredients are definitely not safe to be applying regularly on your skin. Here are some ingredients commonly found in skincare formulas that you want to keep an eye out for and avoid.

Many conventional skincare products contain harmful chemicals that can accumulate in our bodies over time, potentially contributing to serious health issues. Here are some of the most common toxins to avoid in your skincare routine:

Parabens
Parabens are preservatives commonly used in cosmetics and skincare to extend shelf life. However, parabens are known to mimic estrogen in the body, disrupting the endocrine system. Studies have found parabens in breast cancer tissue, raising concerns about their link to hormone-related cancers. While the use of parabens has been restricted in some countries, they are still found in many beauty products.

PEGs
PEGs are petroleum-based compounds used in cosmetics as thickeners, softeners, and solvents. These chemicals can be contaminated with carcinogens such as ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, both of which are classified as human carcinogens. PEGs can also disrupt the skin’s natural moisture balance, leaving it vulnerable to irritation and damage.

Sulfates
Sulfates, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), are commonly found in cleansers and shampoos to create foam. While some sulfates may be marketed as naturally derived, they can still strip the skin of its natural oils, causing dryness, irritation, and even damage to the skin’s barrier. Prolonged use of sulfates can exacerbate conditions such as eczema and dermatitis, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin.

Silicones
Silicones are used in many skincare products to create a smooth, silky texture. While they may feel luxurious on the skin, silicones can form a barrier that traps dirt, bacteria, and sebum, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Additionally, silicones are not biodegradable and can accumulate in the environment, contributing to pollution.

Urea
Urea is used as a preservative and humectant in skincare products. However, it can release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, over time. Exposure to formaldehyde has been linked to skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even cancer in long-term use. Opting for urea-free products is a step towards safer, cleaner beauty.

FD&C and D&C Colors
These synthetic dyes are derived from coal tar or petroleum and are often used to give cosmetics their vibrant colors. FD&C and D&C colors have been linked to skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even cancer. They are particularly problematic for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies, as they can trigger inflammatory responses.

Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol is often used as a preservative in skincare products. While it is considered a safer alternative to parabens, it still has its risks. Phenoxyethanol can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, especially in sensitive individuals. It has also been linked to neurotoxicity when used in high concentrations, making it a questionable ingredient for products used frequently.

How to Detox Your Skincare Routine

If you’re ready to detox your skincare routine, here are a few steps to help you transition to pure, toxin-free products:

Start with your essentials: Begin by replacing the products you use most frequently, such as your cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. These are the products that have the most contact with your skin, so switching them out for clean alternatives will have the greatest impact.

Read labels carefully: Get into the habit of scanning your ingredients’ lists. If it is not good enough to eat then you should not be putting it on your skin. Natural formulations can still include active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, plant based vitamin C, collagen and healthy fats which work as well as synthetic ingredients to improve collagen production, brighten the complexion and improve overall skin health and vitality.

Simplify your routine: Less is often more when it comes to skincare. By using fewer products, you can reduce the number of chemicals your skin is exposed to. Focus on quality over quantity and choose multi-tasking products that provide several benefits in one.

Look at product packaging: When transitioning to natural skincare, one important step is to be mindful of packaging. Opt for products that not only feature clean, plant-based formulas but are also packaged in eco-friendly materials like glass. Glass packaging is not only more sustainable, as it can be recycled endlessly, but it also protects the purity of the natural ingredients. Unlike plastic, glass is non-porous and non-toxic, ensuring that no harmful chemicals leach into the product over time.
