For over twenty years, Hotel Contessa has graced the famous San Antonio River Walk, delivering the best of Texas culture and hospitality on the famed Texan landmark.

As one of the only all-suite hotels on the River Walk, La Contessa has opened their doors to guests and visitors to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of elegance, regal charm, and cultural sophistication. Following a complete 2024 renovation, spanning all 265 suites, the rooftop pool, spa, and meeting spaces, Hotel Contessa continues to impress with a seamless blend of contemporary style and timeless allure.

From River Walk to Rooftop: A Revitalized Tradition of Hospitality

Rising 12 stories above the San Antonio skyline, La Contessa is a tribute to art, culture, and timeless elegance. Every floor reflects a deep respect for heritage, anchored by the breathtaking La Contessa de San Antonio mural. This life-size masterpiece, created in 2014 by renowned local artist Kathy Sosa, greets all visitors in the lobby, ensuring that every moment—from the first steps in the grand entrance lobby beaming with natural light and regal details to the rooftop pool and hot tub beneath the Texas sun—wows guests with the very essence of San Antonio’s charm and sophistication.

The lobby and Ambler bar pay homage to San Antonio’s Spanish heritage with striking white-stone facades, rich leather seating, and dark wood accents. Then, up on the rooftop, the updated pool offers a modern contrast reflecting the city’s cosmopolitan spirit. From a lofty poolside lounger, I soaked in sweeping views of steepled skyscrapers and historic rooftops while the hum of the River Walk drifted upward. For a serene start to the day, I recommend indulging in the hot tub on a quiet morning, witnessing as the city quietly awakens.

With a calendar of events and summer pool parties, La Contessa creates a lively atmosphere that both guests and locals will enjoy. Also recently updated are the spa and meeting spaces, each of which perfectly represents the hotel’s homage to San Antonio’s rich heritage.

Rooms that Inspire Romance and Relaxation

The recently renovated guest suites at La Contessa combine the region’s western lore with the district’s urban façade, creating a lively—and spacious—juxtaposition of design. With pops of colorful art set atop weathered brick and slick concrete walls, guests will find a calming escape within the city that almost never sleeps.

Our evenings were soothed by a nearby lightning storm that turned the cityscape into silhouettes. We watched the quiet storm from a sprawling king-size bed, eating chocolates and sipping on an Oaxaca Old Fashioned, as the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the River Walk illuminated the San Antonio night sky in one of the most magical spectacles.

In the morning, a gentle light poured through the sheer curtains, casting a warm amber glow throughout the suite, an invitation to venture out in one of Texas’s most storied cities. As the suite includes both a sleeping area and a living room, we prepared for the day on one side and watched college football in the other without a blaring hairdryer. Complete with a sectional sofa, a coffee table, and a two-seat high top, there were plenty of areas for us to sit and enjoy coffee before a day on our feet.

Ambler Texas Kitchen + Cocktails

There’s nothing more comforting or warmer than genuine Texas hospitality and cuisine, and both are showcased at Ambler Texas Kitchen + Cocktails, La Contessa’s signature riverfront restaurant. Featuring a rustic yet refined menu highlighting regional ingredients and reimagined takes on traditional dishes, Ambler is a celebration of Texas flavors in a modern atmosphere.

When we sat down for dinner, Ambler was lively with chatter and excitement, as expected from dining in front of one of Texas’s iconic landmarks. But for all the surrounding buzz, Ambler’s down-tempo vibe and shaded views of the Riverwalk created a sense of Lone Star romanticism. We chose indoor seating overlooking the slow-moving river and watched boats drift by. We started with a Cast Iron Goat Cheese Brûlée, a sweet-and-savory delight of bubbling goat cheese topped with local honey, served with warm, soft, grilled flatbread. The 14 oz. Texas Akaushi New York Strip was a satisfying entrée and paired nicely with vibrant chimichurri and crispy house-cut fries. We also had the 7 oz. Sustainable Salmon and went with Garlic Braised Broccolini for the side, which was brimming with salty and savory notes that contrasted harmoniously with the spiced peach chutney.

While dinner and drinks at Ambler made for the perfect romantic ending to an evening at La Contessa, new days are gracefully welcomed with breakfast and brunch. Cold-pressed juices from oranges, grapefruit, watermelon, or pineapple made the perfect follow-up to a morning pool dip or a rooftop hot-tub soak.

Despite the array of health-conscious options, I couldn’t resist indulging in a cocktail on a warm Saturday morning. Nestled under a comforting shade, I savored a Coffee Old Fashioned—a rich blend of Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Caffe del Fuego, espresso syrup, and chocolate bitters—while watching the River Walk slowly come to life. Every so often, a car crossed the old iron bridge. The absence of city traffic offered a quiet pause amid the vibrant rhythm of this Hill Country escape.

A Yearlong Celebration of Culture

Proudly representing San Antonio’s cultural hub, La Contessa celebrates the city’s booming art scene with seasonal in-room art exhibits and a monthly Art Fair. And while summers feature lively poolside parties, fall and winter transform the hotel into a hub of immersive experiences. From month-long Día de Los Muertos festivities to enchanting holiday performances, including the signature “Texas Twinkle” brunch and an elegant string quartet series, Hotel Contessa offers a romantic or family escape for every season.
