This series is all about showcasing the incredible range of experiences California offers — from the serene natural beauty of Yosemite to the vibrant energy of downtown San Diego.
While the Golden State is often associated with a laid-back vibe (and San Diego certainly delivers on that front), don’t be fooled — this city has a sophisticated side. With just 24 hours, you can dive into a dynamic mix of elevated dining, buzzing bars, and a stay at one of the city’s most stylish guest-only hotels, leaving you both refreshed and inspired before heading off to explore the wine destination of SoCal.

The Granger Hotel: Your Artfully Curated Downtown San Diego Escape
Located in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego and designed by Erika Baker, The Granger Hotel was crafted with intentionality in every aspect. Fixtures such as cheetah door handles and elephant coat hooks are an ode to its previous life, when The Granger building housed animals destined for the San Diego Zoo. With your complimentary welcome cocktail in hand, be sure to check out their twist on a traditional mini bar. Every floor has a space designated for water, espresso, and an array of snacks (the jelly beans will tempt you with every pass). The rooms are picturesque, warm and filled with natural lighting. From the signature scent, Le Labo’s Santal 33, that permeates the air, to the mix of handpicked vintage and modern design pieces, to lush plants amidst velvet couches, not a single detail was overlooked in crafting a sultry, creative, and bold space in the heart of San Diego.

Savor Sophistication: Elevated Steakhouse Dining at Huntress San Diego
An evening at Huntress is an event in itself. It breaks from the usual steakhouse mold with upbeat music and a modern design that feels classy but playful. The staff perfectly emulates this vibe with their professionalism and knowledge, while being personable and charming. From smokey displays to plated perfection, every drink and course that comes out feels like the pages of a story you can’t put down. Each dish is to be admired and savored, while also anticipating the next surprise. The mixologists can make the perfect version of any classic cocktail, but don’t miss the genius behind their own concoctions. Pro tip: The Pandanukamui. Feel free to request a butter knife for the tender Australian Wagyu seared to perfection. You can’t go wrong with any sides, but the Confit Maitake Mushrooms and Gnocchi Mac and Cheese deliciously complemented the steak. As far as dessert goes, the Magic Mushroom alone is worth the trip to Huntress. A unique spectacle of a dessert that shines visually, with a pleasant surprise of textures from the creamy mousse, “lighter than air” cake, and crunchy salted crumbles. Huntress doesn’t only serve an exquisite meal, they serve an experience you won’t forget.

Drinks at Lumi: Where Creative Cocktails Meet Stunning City Views
Close out an already perfect night at Huntress with an elevator ride up to the rooftop. Even a Monday feels like a Friday at Lumi, enjoying the best rooftop views, a DJ every night, and inventive craft cocktails with unexpected twists. One of the talented bartenders, Darby, incorporated her own boozy spin inspired by her favorite coffee order. She makes a deliciously smooth espresso martini, topped with a luscious strawberry cold foam and garnished with sprinkles. Another personal favorite, The Angel of Akashi, will satisfy a gin lover’s craving with a drink that’s equally refreshing, beautiful, and complex. The contemporary and vibrant design of Lumi feels fresh and lively, making this the perfect stop for a night out with friends or an upbeat date night.

From Savory Bites to Sweet Masterpieces: A Midday Treat at Extraordinary Desserts
To experience a pastry from Extraordinary Desserts is to indulge in a visual and culinary masterpiece — each bite only enhancing the beauty on the plate. Founded by Executive Chef Karen Krasne, this beloved San Diego staple has been delighting locals and visitors alike for over 30 years. A family- and women-forward business, Extraordinary Desserts has built deep loyalty not only among longtime employees — some of whom have been with Krasne since the beginning — but also with regulars who have woven these desserts into life’s most memorable moments. One devoted guest, for example, has had the same birthday cake here every year — and even chose it for her wedding.

A consistent crowd favorite is the vibrant Passion Fruit Ricotta Cake — light and sweet with a hint of tartness, layered with kiwi, strawberry, and banana, and adorned with the bakery’s signature floral and gold-leaf garnishes. Guests with gluten sensitivities will also find irresistible options, like the rich Flourless Chocolate Berry Cake, perfectly paired with house-made ice cream or sorbet. With new creations appearing daily, no visit is ever the same — and no visit is ever the last. Though famous for its sweets, this spot is also a great lunch stop before hitting the road, with a menu full of delicious boards, paninis, and salads. And of course, it’s the perfect place to stock up on pastries for the journey ahead.
With its unique designs and experimental flavors, downtown San Diego offers a refined urban escape where indulgence is second nature.
