Set atop the highest elevation point in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the most iconic Hill Country getaways.

Here, amid the faint echoes of coaster enthusiasts in the distance and the joyous cries of families brimming with excitement, Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa offers a romantic retreat, packed with boundless amenities to satisfy an intimate weekend or a week-long indulgence. From its sweeping views of rolling hills and lush canopy of the Texas Hill Country to award-winning spa services at Loma de Vida and Michelin-recommended cuisine, La Cantera is the Texas-sized love letter awaiting your arrival.

Lone Star Luxury and Humble Texas Tradition

As we passed through the gates, we were struck by awe watching as the resort’s sprawling 550 acres unfurled into nearly endless rolling green, with bushy tree tops dotting the landscape. Approaching the lobby, the resort’s defining features revealed themselves one by one. There was a picturesque overlook perched above the golf course, a perfect rendezvous for sunset cocktails. There were tennis courts and hiking trails, where playful competition and long nature walks spark vigor and passion. It was a balance of calm and excitement, a choose-your-own-adventure-like canvas to celebrate love and togetherness.

Inside the lobby, La Cantera radiated genuine Texan warmth and authenticity. From the exposed wood beams and stone fireplace to the Western furnishings, every element has been well-crafted and curated to celebrate Texas’s enduring ranching history, one we all owe a debt of gratitude to.

Although the resort has been a cherished San Antonio destination for years, earning recognitions such as Condé Nast’s #1 Resort in Texas and the Southwest in Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, and a Top Ten Texas Resort in Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards, Signia by Hilton recently added La Cantera to its expansive portfolio, which became its first hotel in Texas. This recent acquisition is perfect for La Cantera, adding new levels of prestige and customer service to its long-standing reputation.

King Ranch Rooms: Regionally Inspired and Thoughtfully Designed

A recent, $40 million hotel-wide room refresh completed in 2025 brought even more inspiration from the legendary Texas King Ranch aesthetic, bridging rustic earth tones of woodgrain, olive, and beige with hacienda tilework in the bathrooms to create an authentically Texan space that is warm, inviting, and soothing.

The rooms are both spacious and cozy, glowing with Hill Country brilliance that seeps in through the windows throughout the day. At night, the calming allure of the evening dark further evokes a sense of intimacy, creating a space that feels removed from the city, like a secluded ranchland sanctuary.

Signature Dining Experiences

With nine unique restaurants and bars, there are boundless date-night experiences, each offering an indulgence suited to any occasion or mood. We spent an afternoon having brunch on a pleasantly warm day at SweetFire Kitchen’s patio. The garden and the quiet, meandering guests made for a peaceful morning as I savored a Breakfast Sandwich with crispy bacon, fluffed scrambled eggs, cheddar, and tomato jam on a croissant. I enjoyed a mimosa for a refreshing spritz of bubbles and drank in the views on an early weekend morning.

For a livelier experience, we connected over a few college games at Grille 254, where the casual, sporty ambiance buzzed with excitement. I had a juicy Smokehouse Burger, made with house-made pickles, tomato, bacon, white cheddar, Dr. Pepper BBQ, and fried onions. Perhaps one of the most standout dishes was not an entrée, but a side. The newly revamped fries were excellently seasoned, crispy, and fresh, adding a savory finish to an already delicious main course.

However, a more sophisticated dining option, reflecting not only refined Texas-inspired cuisine but also the Hill Country’s regional magnificence, is found at the award-winning, Michelin Guide-recommended Signature Restaurant. Set beneath a hand-tiled roof, Signature Restaurant is an ode to Texas’s tradition of craftsmen. From the custom sconces and black-steel forged chandeliers to the hand-crafted cabinetry and fixtures, all elements have been curated to mirror the locally inspired gastronomy served on the reclaimed oak tables.

As the surrounding decor has been carefully selected and furnished to create a warm, inviting environment, the service complements this effort. A simple water offer includes a plate of garnishes to infuse, such as mint and other herbs, and a citrus medley of orange and grapefruit slices. The experience continues with a table bread-and-butter starter, simple yet exceptionally executed with a butter roulade wrapped in onion ash for an extra savory kick.

I followed up with the Tempura Squash Blossoms, a delightful, lightly fried blossom resting on a bed of zucchini, topped with herb goat cheese and drizzled with romesco. The Venison served with roasted baby carrots, a crispy potato pave, and tart cherry jus balanced different flavor profiles and textures for a showstopper main course.

Another standout dish was the Halibut served with celery root, zucchini, dill, and a yuzu beurre blanc. Rich and zesty, this flavorful option is light and satisfying. Book here for your Michelin-recommended experience.

Renowned for its menu of services, Loma de Vida’s offerings are bespoke to whatever indulgences the guests crave, whether it’s decadent facials and body wraps or romance-igniting couple massage therapies. We chose the Escape Together package, a symphony of sensual aromas and textures amid an intimate cabin-like atmosphere. The process began with a stress-relieving foot sugar scrub and was followed by a sequence of deep-tissue strokes that purged our bodies of tension, leaving us in a weightless euphoria. The package included a gift set of bath salts and massage oil from Tara Spa Therapies, ensuring the romantic rendezvous continued long after our visit.

After our soothing massages, we sank into a poolside lounge chair and drank an organic cold-pressed juice and a paloma from Quenche Juicery on the bottom floor. Pairing moments with well-crafted food and drink is one way La Cantera perfects the guest experience, and none is more prominent here than the health-conscious poolside offerings from Quenche. In addition to organic cold-pressed juices and fresh cocktails, Quenche offers protein elixirs and food options to support metabolism and internal healing. With our drinks, we watched the sun slowly set while enjoying a charcuterie board of seasonal delights. Book your restorative spa experience here.
