Texas SandFest in Port Aransas is the largest sand sculpting competition in the United States and attracts master sand sculptors from all over the world.
The popular beach town of Port Aransas, Texas, sees over a million visitors each year. We write about it in Texas Lifestyle Magazine at least once a year because we know so many of you vacation there, and it’s nice to have the latest updates on where to eat and what to do. As many times as I’ve been to “Port A,” though, this was my first time going to the Texas SandFest. It’s been on my bucket list for years, and should definitely be on yours!
What is Texas SandFest

It may surprise you to learn that Texas beaches have some of the best sand there is for building sandcastles. The unique combination of sand, silt and clay brings master sculptors from around the world to Port Aransas each year to create jaw-dropping sand art. The shoreline is transformed into an open-air art gallery. Nearly 100,000 people attend the 3-day event which also features live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities.

Wandering around the competition, watching the sculptors create their masterpieces, you can’t help but be amazed at the talent on display. The competition has different categories like Master Duo Sculptors, Master Solo Sculptors, Semi-Pro Sculptors, and Amateurs. Several of the Master Sculptors travel the world competing in ice and snow sculpting competitions, as well as sand.

The artistic sand sculptures were amazing. Winners for each competition are announced on Sunday. This year’s complete list of winner’s can be found online.

Pro Tips for Going to SandFest
- Arrive Early: Plan to arrive when the gates open. Most beach entrances are closed off during the event and all cars are directed to one main entrance. Cars were lined up for blocks trying to get in later in the day.
- Wear sunscreen: Even on cooler spring days, the sun can be intense.
- Be prepared for lots of walking: Wear comfortable beach shoes because you will get in a lot of steps! A limited number of beach wheelchairs can be reserved in advance.
- Mark your calendar: Next year’s SandFest is scheduled for April 17-19, 2026.
Where to Stay in Port Aransas

You can’t beat the Aransas Princess for location! Located right on the beach, these condo-style accommodations offer both comfort and convenience. In addition to beach access, the amenities at the Aransas Princess include two pools, a hot tub, and tennis & pickleball courts. It’s the perfect retreat after a day of festival fun.
Getting Around Town

Renting a golf cart is a fun and convenient way to explore the laid-back streets and coastal charm of Port Aransas. It’s the perfect way to hop between shops, restaurants, and the beach without the hassle of a car. Plus, cruising with the salty breeze and ocean views makes getting around part of the vacation experience. Bonus – you won’t have to buy a beach permit for your car as most golf cart rentals come with a permit and you won’t go home with a car full of sand. You will find golf cart rentals all over town, but we like the colorful, themed golf carts at Port A Beach Buggies.
Eating in Port Aransas

Tortuga’s Saltwater Grill remains a local favorite and is known for its fresh seafood and inviting atmosphere. Tortuga’s serves delicious dishes in a relaxed setting. We love the shrimp and grits.

Located at the Palmilla Beach Resort, Black Marlin is the place to go for an upscale dining experience with a focus on fresh seafood and steaks. This is one of the few places in Port Aransas with a dress code, so put away the tank tops and swimsuit coverups and enjoy a nice date night. Reservations are recommended.

Enjoy waterfront dining at Virginia’s where you can choose either indoor or open-air seating and watch boats sailing in and out of the marina. You can’t go wrong ordering the catch of the day at this fun, casual restaurant.

This iconic Port A eatery has been serving up delicious, homemade cooking since the ‘70s. It’s a family favorite of ours and a great place to dine when you’re with a group. The eclectic combo of pizza, pasta and seafood ensures something for everyone.
Best Breakfast Spots to Start Your Day

For a fast delicious breakfast, stop by Irie’s Island Bakery. The cute island vibe and retro ‘80s tunes made us want to sit and stay awhile. Choosing which of their baked goods (muffins, cinnamon rolls, croissants, and more!) to purchase was a tough choice, though, so I recommend getting some to eat while you’re there and extras to take with you for later.

Don’t sleep in if you plan to go to Coffee Waves. This popular coffee shop had a line out the door by 9:00 a.m. the first day we stopped by, so we decided to wait and go back much earlier the next day. Order your favorite coffee drink – hot, iced or frozen – as well as smoothies, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. The colorful chalk mural on the wall is a great backdrop for social media posts.
Exploring Nature and Marine Life
Sandcastles on the beach and fishing in the Gulf may be the main attractions in Port Aransas, but you’ll find plenty of other activities on the island to keep you busy.
Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center

My kids have loved going here ever since they were young. The Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center is a fun outing for everyone from curious children to serious birding enthusiasts. With boardwalks over wetlands, viewing platforms, and educational signage, it’s a serene spot to observe local bird species and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. If you’re lucky, you might even see the alligator “Boots,” a local celebrity reptile who hangs out in the wetlands. Free admission.
Patton Center for Marine Science Education

Port Aransas is home to The University of Texas Marine Science Institute. I remember coming here for a 3-day school field trip in 1983 and thinking how cool it would be to go to college at the beach. The Patton Center for Marine Science Education is a free museum with hands-on interactive exhibits about local marine life and ecosystems.

Cap off your day with a sunset dolphin cruise aboard the Scarlet Lady. This scenic tour offers the chance to witness dolphins in their natural habitat. TIP: Book your reservations early as they might sell out on holidays and busy weekends. Bring some cash to tip your captain and guide after the cruise.
Final Thoughts
Whether it’s your first visit to Port Aransas or you’ve been making the trip for decades, the thrill of the ferry ride never gets old. The moment you drive off that boat, you’re officially on Island Time—so slow down, unplug, and let the laid-back coastal vibes guide the rest of your stay. Port A offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
