Fun here, fun there, fun everywhere! There’s definitely no shortage of entertainment when you visit Pensacola, Florida.
If you aren’t familiar with the city located in Florida’s panhandle, surrounded by 50-plus miles of coastline — have no fear! I’m here to guide you on where to stay, what to do, and what to eat when in the sunshine state.
The Happening Hilton
When in doubt, you should relax and recharge at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Hotel. Literally located directly on the beach, the Hilton is in the center of everything. From the exciting arts and culture to popular local restaurants, and of course, one of the world’s whitest sandy beaches. As soon as you walk in the wide-open lobby, you’re hit with the aquatic feel, decorated in shades of blue, glass-chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pool deck that leads to the beach.
Every room comes with a view, because in every direction there’s water — the Gulf of Mexico and the Santa Rosa Sound to be exact. For the families traveling down here, I recommend staying in the Double Queen Junior Suite Gulfview with a Bunk Bed. The two double queens, bunk bed, and living room area with a pullout couch make the space a perfect fit for a large family. Wake up in the morning and enjoy an exquisite breakfast on the hotel balcony, fit for a king. At night, soak in the views of the moon reflecting from the ocean waves and the city that brings Florida to life.
Military Town
Pensacola is a proud military town, thanks to the Naval Air Station. It’s often been referred to as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation.” In addition, the world-famous Blue Angels are based in NAS Pensacola and can be seen practicing overhead on select days throughout the year. I just so happened to visit Pensacola on Veterans Day, how lucky am I?
I attended a special Veterans Day concert, From Sea to Shining Sea: A Musical Salute to Service to celebrate, honor, and pay tribute to our community’s veterans. The free performance was presented by the Pensacola Opera, which featured some of the nation’s most beloved patriotic tunes. The place was a full house packed with people. It was definitely a special time witnessing the community come together on a very special day, even more so to the city.
Fun at Foo Foo Fest
Most people flock to the state because of the sandy beaches, warm climate, and popular attractions like Walt Disney. But Florida is more than just the theme park capital of the world, especially come November when a very special festival takes place in Pensacola. For those who don’t know, I’m talking about the annual Foo Foo Festival. (2022 dates are Nov 3-14.) What is Foo Foo Fest you might ask? It’s a 12-day celebration, with culturally creative happenings and events; I’m talking art, music, film, games, and more, all under one banner!
Love for Live Music
If you have a love for live music like I do, you’ll enjoy the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival. The event brings together the authors of original music into the spotlight. Each year, award winning talent hits the stage at various places around town.
I caught some live musical acts at one of the world’s top beach bars, The Flora-Bama Lounge that’s uniquely located on the Alabama and Florida line, hence the name. The famous Flora-Bama has five stages for live music; chill out in any of the areas and select the entertainment of your choice. Sip on a well-known Bushwacker (that’s basically an adult milkshake) while you jam out. Order a “Floater” for an extra shot!
No Shoes, No Shirt, Yes Service
If you need a little time away from the music, go across the street to the Flora-Bama Yacht Club to have a burger and a beer, (or another Bushwhacker). This is where the adults come to play. The kids will love it here too, especially playing in the sand. Arrive by boat, car, paddle board, whatever you like.
Film at Foo Foo
The STAMPED Film Festival is all about providing a cultural experience to Pensacola by using the unique expression of films with a specific focus on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. From romance to comedy to drama, each unique film was expressive and touching. Be sure to check out the film festival come summer 2022!
The Magic of Art
Celebrate the magic and power of art with the “A Celebration of Art: An Immersive 3D Projection Experience,” mixing together virtual and live performances. A unique experience indeed, the Cultural Center and the Museum of Art come alive with Disney-like projections bouncing back and forth, such as spooky jail history, colorful pops of art and a towering 3D portrayal of the various types of arts and culture represented throughout Pensacola.
Games Galore
Would it even be considered fun if games weren’t involved? The Pensacola Mess Hall has different activations, games and special themed activities to check out next time you visit. It was my first time playing Giant Mancala, and losing in all my glory, but fun nonetheless. Things get pretty heated at the “Ping Pong Tournament on Palafox,” hosted by Zarzaur Law. With many tables lined up, the tournament is fun for all ages and levels. There’s an amateur slot for people like me, and a slot for the advanced peeps.
Condor Sailing
It’s a must to go Condor Sailing while in town for Foo Foo. This isn’t your ordinary, crowded boat ride with a boring captain. Captain Kirk brings the experience of a lifetime aboard this world-class 40 ft. Condor racing trimaran, Dare II. I could give you many reasons why condor sailing is better, but I’ll only name some. First off, it’s speedy yet stable; it has six times the speed of a speedboat and can stay stable throughout small or big waves. It won’t even feel like you’re moving!
Only 21 Condor boats exist, and one is in Pensacola. Pretty special if you ask me. It’s a rare experience of a lifetime that’s fun for families, couples, grandparents, anyone. Relax and dangle your feet in the water, pretend like you are Rose and Jack from the Titanic, and spot those friendly dolphins.
The Wildlife
If you take a stroll on the beach you just might catch a glimpse of those friendly dolphins like I did. It was a magical moment spotting one while the sun was setting with the prettiest orange. There’s wildlife all over the place. If you keep your eyes peeled, you’ll most likely spot a stingray flapping in the water. I saw a stingray, dolphin, and someone catching a baby shark all in the span of 15 minutes.
Coastal Cuisine
Visit the Fish House of Pensacola, known for its fresh seafood cuisine coupled with upscale dockside dining. The award-winning restaurant features an array of fresh daily seafood. The Sisters Fried Chicken was super crunchy, tender, juicy, and flavorful. (I cleaned up every inch of my plate, that’s how good it was.) Take in the views of the beautiful Pensacola Bay and Seville Harbor while you chow down.
Dive into the Drift menu of coastal cuisine with creative seafood dishes, prime steak, an elegant cocktail menu, and more. I absolutely love the modern decor splashed with coral pieces that hang on the ceiling, as well as unique light fixtures that resemble sea life. The deck has a marvelous view of the ocean.
The Grand Marlin is a mix of sophisticated and fancy yet relaxed atmosphere. Pair that with stunning sunset views and delectable daily specials from award-winning chef Greg McCarthy and you have yourself a great catch, and a full belly. Try the Crispy Lobster Fingers as an appetizer or a Crab Cake that’s 98% pure crab. Any of the house-made desserts are great options, but I recommend both the Key Lime Pie and Carrot Cake. Oh so delicious!
Alice’s Golf Coast Restaurant and Wine Bar is pretty new but has already received accolades from locals; it was voted best new restaurant in 2020. One side of the establishment is upscale while the other is more laid-back. You’ll enjoy listening to live music while you munch on the wonderful Lobster Ravioli. Everything here is made from scratch and caught every day. For those wanting a break from seafood, two words: Margarita Pizza (or any pizza for that matter). The S’more Chocolate Brûlée was beyond tasty. I wish I could replay those bites over and over again. Frank’s Bread Pudding served with Bourbon Caramel Sauce was another excellent choice.
Drinky Drinks
Delicious dining calls for some drinky drinks! At The Kennedy, you’ll find classic cocktails along with small bites to coincide. With vegetarian and meat lover options alike, The Kennedy is a super brunch spot where mid-century cocktails meet 21st-century libations. Start your day with a Mimosa and the tasty, yet messy hot and sweet Chicken Biscuits.
The Sneaky Tiki opened in 2018 and quickly became a local favorite because of its secluded location away from typical tourist areas. The secluded spot won Best Bar by Pensacola Beach InWeekly. It’s one of those places that if you know, you know, and if you don’t, well, ask a local. I quickly understood why, as I got lost finding it the first time. Take a picture in front of the iconic love sign or historic Pensacola Beach sign and experience a spot like no other.
