Glamping anyone?

These days, most of us are familiar with the term “glamping”, an endearing word combining the great outdoors with all the conveniences of home. At the risk of upsetting the traditional campers, this is a perfect option for the running water and electricity city gal such as myself. After all, who doesn’t want to experience their own private oasis right in the heart of Texas?

Nestled within the Lake Bastrop North Shore Park, an hour’s simple drive from the Greater Austin area, is an ideal option for a romantic getaway, girls weekend, family reunion, or a solo retreat to disconnect and reconnect to nature.

The 182-acre park boasts a variety of activities for the outdoor enthusiast, such as a 4 ½ mile hiking trail, boat ramp, fishing pier, camp store and watercraft rental for those inclined to explore. The beauty and serenity of the park engulfs you with a vacation vibe; flora, fauna and relaxation abound.

Upon arrival, on a sunny fall afternoon, we were greeted by the Lower Colorado River Authority park host to delight in the experience of glamping in one of the five Airstream trailers recently added to the park. Each trailer is appropriately named for iconic Austin individuals or landmarks.

Guests are advised that it is only necessary to bring the appropriate seasonal attire, food, favorite beverage, and an adventurous fun-filled mindset; everything else is provided. Boy, it that an understatement! As we entered the trailer “Loblolly,” we were pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail and conveniences invested into this pampering adventure.

The interior of the trailer is a distinct blend of retro and modern craftsmanship, with countless features to accommodate up to four guests. The superior workmanship of the Airstream provides a virtual soundproof barrier to the exterior noise, and an incredible view of the Lake Bastrop.

We take a seat at the dining table to share a glass of wine while soaking in the beauty of the sun setting on Lake Bastrop as it drifted through the wraparound windows. A quick check into the cabinets of the “comforts of home” kitchen had revealed wine glasses and an opener just begging to be engaged to kick off this mini vacation.

After a delicious meal prepared on the built-in outdoor grill and using fresh herbs from the garden planted for guest use, it was time to build a cozy fire and indulge in this old time favorite camping past time on the campsite patio area. (The wrought iron fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs comes complete with the wood to warm your hands and hearts.)

With full bellies and warm hearts, it was time to call it a day and head inside.

In the bedroom, you’ll find a queen-size bed and custom window coverings to provide privacy and a restful sleep. A hidden pocket-door sections off the bedroom from the rest of the trailer for added privacy. After a dreamy night of sleep, the indulgence of a freshly brewed coffee was just the flick of a switch away; coffee, sweeteners and mugs were all provided. The morning brought a day of outdoor adventures, such as hiking, fishing, watersports or simply relaxing.

If shopping and art galleries are more your idea of entertainment, the quaint town of Bastrop is a mere 10-minute drive away and is home to an eclectic selection of restaurants, shopping, artistic and historical places of interest. From the young to the old traveler alike, there is something for everyone. The next time you are planning a weekend getaway, discover Lake Bastrop North Shore Park and Bastrop.
