The epitome of posh — La Table, at 1800 Post Oak Blvd. near Houston’s Galleria — is a French culinary delight.
The multi-level and concept restaurant La Table briefly shut down in March ‘21 and officially reopened its doors in November. This Post Oak haute spot has tweaked their original concept with a new menu (and a few classics that remain), along with a newly redesigned outdoor patio – for that la vie en rose feeling.
The Space
Keeping up with neighbor’s like Houston’s famed Cafe Annie is no easy feat, but La Table has gleefully taken their imposing two-story space and provided a restaurant and cafe with something for everyone. The stunning interior is a lesson in mood. From the casual chicness of a Parisian cafe on the bottom level – to the opulent vibe of the restaurant upstairs with private dining rooms, the space is impeccable in design.
Let’s begin above. On the upper floor are two private dining areas, the Champagne Room and the Paris Room. A stairwell walled with Assouline books leads to the upscale dining, setup for intimate and private events.
Private Dining
The Champagne Room seats only ten – with a large rectangular table for family-style dining equipped with presentation abilities, and is perfect for CEOs needing privacy. The Paris Room is a bit more inclusive, overlooking Post Oak with floor to ceiling windows. Heavily-textured chairs and floors pull in vibrant blues and rich colors evocative of a well-appointed French chateau. The clientele is likely to casually mention plans for Jackson Hole — dress accordingly.
Restaurant and Patio
The cafe on the main floor might be the casual counterpart to the restaurant above, but still gives off that effortless Parisian cool, complete with macarons and baguettes to grab-and-go and a patio that wraps around the side of the restaurant for outdoor dining.
The Goods
Chef Artem Orlovskyy’s French-inspired menus are curated with finds from local artisans, ranchers and producers.
Feeling grand? The restaurant offers a Grand Plateau – an impressive tower of seafood lobster, oysters, shrimp and crab. Truly, the seafood might be the best the Paris Room offers – the Octopus Basquaise is expertly prepared, a texture closely related to sublimely prepared scallops – with Yukon gold potatoes and a bright herb vinaigrette.
Longtime fans of the restaurant (La Table opened several years ago before going through its pandemic transition) can find throwback dishes every weekend; the restaurant will serve different, beloved dishes from a previous menu like its Agnolotti with potato and black truffle and Brown Butter Zabaglione.
Standouts include the French Onion Soup with braised beef shank, caramelized onions and gruyere croutons and the classic Steak & Frites.
Desserts like Gâteau Marjolaine Flourless Chocolate and Apple Tart Breton are a must for the full experience. The libations are fabulous too, with a beverage menu filled to the brim with jaw-dropping wine (like the 2019 Chablis, Michel & Fils Grand Cru for $228 a bottle) to carefully crafted cocktails like crowd-pleasing Smoked Old Fashioned with bourbon, frangelico, espresso syrup and house-made chocolate bitters.
