The axe-swinging story of Lizzie Borden takes the stage in this fierce, all-women rock musical — back in Austin for a limited run July 11-20, 2025.
Get ready Austin, cause this summer you’re about to experience LIZZIE: The Musical, a fresh and fierce original take on one of America’s most infamous stories. I’m sure you’ve heard of it – the one about Lizzie Borden murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in 1892 (or so the story goes).
The case remains a mystery to this day, but there’s a rhyme often sung that helped keep it alive:
“Lizzie Borden took an axe,
And gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.”

The real truth? Lizzie was accused of killing her father and step mother with a hatchet, not an axe. Abby Borden was struck 18 or 19 times and Andrew 11.
“LIZZIE the Musical” reimagines the haunting tale and trial as a bold rock musical. That’s right, a ROCK musical! With an all-women cast and a score that channels raw energy and emotion, the show dives deep into themes of female empowerment, abuse, repression, murder, and the making of an American myth.

Starring Stella Frye Ginsberg as Lizzie Borden, alongside Leslie Hollingsworth as Emma, Libby Dees as Bridget, Maryanna Tollemache as Alice, with Madi Sipe and Jessica Workman as ensemble.
The award-winning rock musical returns for a limited eight show engagement, July 11-20, 2025, at Austin Playhouse.
Tickets start at $24: Get yours here!
A hidden gem of musical theatre! Don’t miss your chance to experience “LIZZIE: The Musical” live.
