Spring in Texas rarely eases in quietly. Bluebonnets line the highways, restaurant patios fill almost overnight, and weekends suddenly feel too short to fit everything in.
One of the season’s most beloved traditions returns on April 25 as the annual Wine & Roses Festival takes over Messina Hof Winery in Bryan for a full day of food, art, and, of course, wine.

Spread across the winery’s vineyard grounds just outside town, the festival unfolds at an unhurried pace. Guests move easily between tastings and artisan booths, pausing to relax with a glass of wine as the afternoon slips by. It’s an event meant for lingering rather than rushing, where conversations last as long as the comfortable Texas spring weather.

One of the festival’s signature attractions is the ever-popular grape stomp competition. Teams climb into barrels and crush grapes the old-fashioned way while spectators gather around to cheer and photograph the inevitable purple-stained feet. Equal parts competition and entertainment, the stomp draws both serious competitors and visitors simply enjoying the spectacle.

Creativity also takes center stage during the artist competition, where painters display their work throughout the day and guests vote for their favorite piece. The winning artwork will not only be displayed at the winery but will also appear on a future Messina Hof wine label. This year’s theme, “A Story in the Stars,” invites artists to interpret the festival’s romantic atmosphere in their own way.

While the wine remains the centerpiece, the festival places just as much emphasis on the culinary experience. Guests who select either the Foodie or Ultimate packages can participate in guided pairings, beginning with the “Opposites Attract” food-and-wine class led by Karen Bonarrigo, which explores how contrasting flavors complement one another.

Ultimate Package holders can also attend the “Founding Father’s Favorites” tasting with owner and winemaker Paul Bonarrigo, inspired by wines enjoyed in early American history. In addition, both Foodie and Ultimate ticket tiers include the relaxed, come-and-go “Barrels & BBQ” pairing, matching Texas barbecue with Messina Hof wines throughout the day.
Whether visitors come for the competitions, the art, or simply to enjoy a spring Saturday outdoors, the Wine & Roses Festival highlights what makes Texas winery events special. It offers a chance to slow down, gather with friends and family, and appreciate the brief window of mild weather before summer arrives.

For Central Texas travelers, the festival also makes an easy day trip from Austin or Houston, providing a welcome change of scenery and a perfect way to toast the season. For tickets and additional details, visit Messina Hof Wine and Roses.
