Rock ‘N Cajun in Katy, Texas: Where to Find Authentic Louisiana Crawfish This Season

There are plenty of seasons Texans look forward to—the few fall days we get and the beautiful stretches of spring—but the one that matters most? Crawfish season.

Living next to Louisiana, Texans are blessed with the opportunity to have crawfish in their backyard. As soon as February hits, the Facebook posts are already being posted saying,  “where can we find crawfish this weekend?” With multiple places to choose from, it can be hard to find the ones that taste like Louisiana the best. That is where Jarrod and Zarina Masoner, owners of Rock ‘n Cajun come in.

Originally from New Orleans, the Masoners have lived in Sugar Land for the last ten years. Being from Louisiana, they are naturally big foodies and are used to eating some of the best food in the world. After not being able to find crawfish that tasted just like home, Jarrod opened a catering company as a hobby where he would boil crawfish for different events. What started out as just a trailer has turned into one of the top places to get crawfish in the Katy, Texas, area.

You can find Rock ‘N Cajun Fridays – Sundays at No Label Brewing (both Jarrod and Zarina still work corporate jobs! That is how much crawfish means to them). Naturally with “rock ‘n” in the name, I had to ask where that came from. “My dad played guitar my entire life. He passed away right before we started this company. I was going through my emails one day and saw he had sent me a family crest. So we took parts of that and put it on the label. The guitar is actually his favorite one. I can play and sing as well, so I wanted to do something that was marketable. I never saw anyone who was playing, singing and cooking at the same time so that is where the idea came from. Of course, I have yet to do that because of how busy we get, but that is where the name comes from,” said Jarrod.

Speaking to Jarrod, you can tell he has Cajun ties. His accent made me ready to eat crawfish and transported me to that small town in Louisiana. When making crawfish, he follows certain  steps to ensure that they have the best flavor in all of Katy. “We premix our stuff. I stop by and cook the base every time. Our main focus is the customers and making sure they have the best product available,” Jarrod said.

One of my personal favorite things about crawfish is the sauce that comes along with it. Rock ‘N Cajun might just have the best one out there. “The sauce is definitely the best part. People from H-E-B have reached out about wanting to sell the sauce. Crawfish season is just such a busy time that we cannot produce bottles of sauce for other people when we want our customers to have access to it. I came up with the recipe and I really made it as an all-purpose sauce. You can use it on po-boys, honestly people love it on everything. It shouldn’t work but it does. We are hoping to get it back on our website soon so our customers can buy it.”

If you aren’t hungry yet- just wait until you hear about their stats. They are the only company who has ever won a crawfish competition in both the Cajun and Asian category! If first place is not a testament to how good their crawfish is, I do not know what is.

While everyone loves a good weekend outside eating crawfish, Jarrod and Zarina also do a ton of catering events. One of the most notable? The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “We were able to cater to all of the rodeo contestants and their families during the rodeo,” Jarrod said. They are able to cook and serve 1,000 pounds of crawfish in just three hours.

Now, if you are not a fan of crawfish but still want to go and hangout do not worry- they have additional options for you, like shrimp and gumbo.
