There’s no shortage of places to grab a good cocktail in Texas. From hidden speakeasies and intimate cocktail lounges to breweries and lively rooftops with a view, our roundup of bars has something for every occasion.

AUSTIN

Bar Hacienda

Bar Hacienda’s drink menu is playful and unexpected, offering bold twists on familiar classics, drawing inspiration from flavors and drinks across Latin America. Photo courtesy Bar Hacienda

Bar Hacienda traded its hidden spot beneath Tiger Lily for a permanent home on Rainey Street, giving the cocktail bar more space in one of Austin’s busiest nightlife spots. Inside, the space is dimly lit and effortlessly cool with a come-as-you-are-attitude. Its lively atmosphere and Latin-inspired cocktails make it easy to stop in for a drink and settle in. The music sets this place apart from others, with its Latin sounds, hip-hop and global beats.

Created by industry veterans Terance Robson and Jack Hogan, the drink menu is playful and unexpected, offering bold twists on familiar classics. The menu expands on the Latin influence, drawing inspiration from flavors and drinks across Latin America.

The Miami Nice is sweet, delicious, and layered with pineapple notes, making it perfect for a beachy, warm-weather mood. Sand in My Pants stood out as an ideal starter: light, citrusy, and easygoing. The Jezebel and Hacienda Highball were equally refreshing, both giving that unmistakable feeling of I should be drinking this on a beach somewhere. For something with a little more bite, the Bingo Banjo drinks like a tart margarita variation, balanced with just enough acidity to keep it crisp. And if you’re in the mood for something indulgent, Kirby’s Chocolate Old Fashioned leans into dessert territory—rich, smooth, and slightly decadent.

Other highlights include Hacienda Daiquiri which combines rum with sweet plantain, palm sugar and lime, or the Paloma that brings together tequila, sotol, clarified grapefruit, smoked chipotle agave, and bubbles.

The Latin influence isn’t just showing up on the cocktail menu, Bar Hacienda’s new managing partners – Jesus Verde, Michael Barbosa, and Victor Bernal – bring Venezuelan, Puerto Rican, and Mexican backgrounds to help shape its new direction.

Bar Hacienda is taking advantage of its new home to expand beyond the drinks, with plans for cocktail classes, chef pop-ups, and DJ nights featuring both local and visiting talent.

Be sure to stop by for $7 signature cocktails during Happy Hour, which runs Tuesday through Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Whether you’re looking for a creative cocktail, lively soundtrack, or just somewhere to let the night unfold, Bar Hacienda is the kind of place that works whether you’re stopping in solo or settling in for the night with friends.

Parley

Parley delivers inventive cocktails inspired by the neighborhood pubs of Ireland. Photo courtesy Parley

Located in East Austin’s bar scene, Parley is a neighborhood-focused cocktail bar that needs to be on your radar!

The overall vibe at Parley has the feel of a hidden neighborhood gem, which was actually inspired by the neighborhood pubs of Ireland. The goal was to create a place where regulars mix with newcomers and people linger to chat over drinks rather than rush through reservations. The place is casual but still delivers inventive cocktails.

The Parley Punch is one of the most unique cocktails on the menu, requiring a full day of preparation before it’s ready to be served. The Frozen Paloma was dangerously easy to drink, while the Marge Simpson combines smoky mezcal with pineapple for a tasty twist. My personal favorite though was the Straight In No Kissin’ – a grapefruit-forward cocktail that’s citrusy and refreshing – one that I would happily order again.

The menu has some tasty options to pair with your cocktails – the Boxty Balls are mashed potato and mozzarella croquettes topped with parmesan. Photo courtesy Parley

If you’re hungry, the menu has some tasty options to pair with your cocktails. Order the Boxty Balls, which are mashed potato and mozzarella croquettes topped with parmesan, or the Spice bag –- crispy seasoned chicken that pairs deliciously with curry mayo.

Don’t be surprised when one drink turns to many while you get lost in conversation!

Bar Fino

Bar Fino is one of the few places on Rainey Street where you can start your morning and easily spend hours catching up with friends over drinks. Photo courtesy Bar Fino

Bar Fino continues to ‘raise the bar’ on Rainey Street with its newly expanded space and thoughtful cocktail program, which comes from co founders Terance Robson and Jack “Slim” Hogan, the duo also behind Bar Hacienda and Parley.

It feels less like visiting a bar and more like hanging out in the backyard that everyone wishes they had. The award-winning bar recently added a neighboring bungalow and patio surrounded by lush greenery and cozy seating. Now that Fleet Coffee and La Santa Barbacha have joined the space during the day, it’s become one of the few places on Rainey where you can start your morning and easily spend hours catching up with friends over drinks.

The Raz Aperol Spritz was bright and refreshing –- it reminded me of an adult Hi-C in the best way. The M&M is great for anyone who loves Moscow Mule, while the signature El Fino remains a must-try for anyone looking for something more spirit-forward. Judging by the packed crowd on a Friday night, it’s clear Bar Fino is here to stay, and has already become one of Rainey’s go-to cocktail spots.

Modern Bar

Located in Rainey Street District, Modern Bar isn’t your average cocktail bar. From the moment you walk in, the dim lighting, sleek design, and dramatic back bar create an upscale atmosphere that feels more like a cocktail lounge and less like your typical neighborhood bar.

The cocktails here really shine, as many of them borrow inspiration from flavors and techniques from around the world. Bar Director Gabe Ford creates drinks that feel almost scientific without sacrificing the flavor, using unexpected ingredients.

The Mushroom Manhattan surprised me with its rich umami flavors. The playful Silk Sheets tasted almost like grown-up candy. The Circle of the Serpent featured earthy mushroom notes balanced by bright citrus. For more of the classics, The Penthouse Paloma was silky smooth with an edible garnish, while the Golden Hour Martini offered an inventive twist.

Every garnish has a purpose, every ingredient tells a story, and even the details like branded ice cubes make each drink feel like an experience rather than simply something to sip. This is definitely the type of place you’ll find yourself lingering well past last call!

Zilker Brewing

The Dirty Shirley puts an adult spin on a Shirley Temple, keeping that familiar sweet flavor with a little extra sparkle. Photo courtesy Zilker Brewing

Zilker Brewing may be known for its beer, but its cocktail program deserves some recognition too! The menu serves up a mix of familiar favorites with playful, seasonal drinks that make a strong case for ordering something besides a beer.

The Dirty Shirley puts an adult spin on a Shirley Temple, keeping that familiar sweet flavor with a little extra sparkle. The Spicy Watermelon Margarita had the perfect balance of tart and heat, while the Peach Mule was crisp and refreshing –- perfect for sipping on a Texas afternoon. And if you want a tropical vibe, the Pina Colada is another option for those who prefer something on the sweeter side. The Mangonada was another standout being easy to drink, with its fruity and refreshing flavors that barely taste like alcohol.

From frozen, fruit-forward drinks to spicy margaritas and tart mules, Zilker Brewing’s playful cocktail menu is worth exploring. Photo courtesy Zilker Brewing

Whether it’s stopping by for happy hour, catching up with friends, or just looking for a cold refreshment on a hot Texas day, Zilker Brewing’s cocktail menu is worth exploring. From frozen, fruit-forward drinks to spicy margaritas and tart mules, the cocktail menu makes it easy to find something depending on your mood and gives you plenty of ways to cool down without reaching for a beer. Grab a drink, settle in on the spacious patio, and let the laid-back East Austin atmosphere do the rest!

The Royale Room

Martinis are the star of the show; the cocktail program leans heavily into creative martinis while still offering classics. Photo courtesy The Royale Room

Tucked inside the Thompson + tommie Austin, The Royale Room feels like a hidden gem in the midst of downtown, yet is somehow a refreshing escape from the city chaos. The moody cocktail lounge offers a quieter, more intimate atmosphere that makes it feel worlds away from the busy street outside.

Martinis are the star of the show here; the cocktail program leans heavily into creative martinis while still offering classics. The Espresso Martini was rich without being overly sweet, while the Cosmopolitan delivered exactly what you expect from a well-made classic that never goes out of style.

The Royale Room always has something new on the menu, as the rotating monthly martini specials keep the menu fresh. Photo courtesy The Royale Room

There’s always something new on the menu, as the rotating monthly martini specials keep the menu fresh. Pair your drinks with the Royal Tots that are worth ordering for the table – loaded with queso and chorizo, or the Steak Frites, which was cooked incredibly tender and flavorful.

To add to the ambiance, you can catch live music on select evenings as well. The dim atmosphere and live music make it easy for date nights, celebrations, catching up with friends, or an elevated girl’s night out. This is the kind of place where you can get lost in conversations for hours over martinis!

Pins Mechanical Co. proves you don’t have to choose between tasty cocktails and a fun night out! The lively South Austin venue combines craft cocktails with duckpin bowling, pinball, and arcade games – making it suitable for casual date nights, birthday celebrations, or a group night out.

The rotating cocktail menu keeps things fresh and interesting with seasonal creations and classics, along with an impressive selection of zero-and low-proof options. The cocktail menu is just as fun as the venue itself, with playful names like the Pinball Wizard, Hulk Hogan, and Flower Child that fit right in with the vibe. Whether you’re wanting a creative seasonal cocktail or one of the zero- and low-proof drinks, there’s plenty of options for the pickiest of drinkers. Be sure to stop by during happy hour from 4-7p.m. where you can get $5 off specialty cocktails!

This hangout spot manages to feel both energetic yet laid-back, creating the kind of place that’s easy to lose track of time. And with JewBoy Sliders and Lefty’s pizza at your fingertips, you’re bound to stick around for more than “just one drink.”

The Roosevelt Room

With over 80 cocktails on the menu, The Roosevelt Room has something for every kind of drinker, ranging from creative signatures to classics. Photo Marc Swendner

The Roosevelt Room has certainly earned its reputation as a cocktail destination, and you’ll easily understand why once you take a look at the menu. If you’re the type of person who likes to have plenty of options, this is your place to be. There are over 80 cocktails on the menu, ranging from creative signatures to classics, as well as a curated selection of spirits, beer, and wine. It’s a whole experience just choosing a drink on its own. Whether you’re looking for something sweet, spirit-forward, or easy to sip, this downtown cocktail bar has something for every kind of drinker out there.

A Poet’s Muse is a great example of the creativity behind the cocktails, as it was created by the owner. It was one of the more memorable drinks I tried and stood out for its balance of sweet and tart flavors. It’s sweet and refreshing, with layers of flavor that make every sip a little different. The Hotel Nacional was another standout, while the French 45 is a classic choice if you want to keep things simple with a combination of gin and Champagne. Despite the Paper Plane being bourbon-based, I was pleasantly surprised by how smooth and easy to sip it was.

The Zombie comes as an over-the-top Tiki classic inside a ceramic skull glass; the bartenders then top it with caramelized absinthe and light it on fire with flamed cinnamon powder. Photo Eric Mesker

One of the most popular drinks at this cocktail bar is the Zombie; it comes as an over-the-top Tiki classic inside a ceramic skull glass. The bartenders top it with caramelized absinthe and light it on fire with flamed cinnamon powder. Be sure to pull out those cameras for this one! The drink looks way more intimidating than it tastes – as I thought it went down deliciously easy and smooth.

With such an extensive cocktail menu, Roosevelt Room is the kind of place you can come back to several times and still have plenty left to try. It’s a great spot for cocktail enthusiasts, but casual drinkers will find plenty of approachable options, too.

Powder Room

Powder Room is one of those places where if you know, you know. It’s a secret speakeasy discreetly tucked behind Manny’s, a Cuban-Texas sandwich shop on 5th Street. One of the first things you should be aware of: Powder Room has a no-phone policy. Guests are required to check in their phones with the host to fully be present during their visit. Personally, I loved this — not having the pressure to take photos or videos felt like a relief. I felt more engaged and social, and overall, the night felt a little more special because of it.

Once you step inside, the atmosphere completely changes to a retro-glam feel with its moody, warm lighting, velvet seating, and greenery. The space is intimate and feels like a cozy living-room. The energy depends on when you go. Earlier in the week is more relaxed and lounge-like, while Thursday through Saturday is more upscale-casual and brings more music and entertainment to the space.

The Garden Party cocktail was a favorite of the night; it was super refreshing and light, with fresh mint that tasted like a mojito. Photo Daniel Nguyen

When it comes to cocktails, the menu includes both classic and house cocktails. But it’s the  tableside cocktail service that makes it especially fun. You can customize your drink and watch the bartenders put everything together right at your table. The cocktail menu is simple in the best way; it’s easy to find something you already know you’ll like, yet creative enough if you want to try something new. My favorite drink? Garden Party. It was super refreshing and light, with fresh mint that made it feel almost like a mojito.

So if you’re looking for something that feels a little different from your typical night out, Powder Room is worth putting on your list. This cocktail bar is effortlessly cool and feels like its own little world once you step inside. It’s easy to see why it’s become a fun hotspot for a night out on the town!

Péché

Péché is Austin’s first absinthe bar, offering a wide selection of pre-Prohibition-style cocktails. Photo courtesy Péché

If you’re intimidated by absinthe, Péché may change your mind! Péché is Austin’s first absinthe bar, a cocktail program headed by bar manager Derek Weiss, offering a wide selection of pre-Prohibition-style cocktails. This downtown absinthe bar puts a fun, yet approachable twist on the strong spirit, making it surprisingly easy to enjoy – even if it’s your first time. The atmosphere is cozy yet casual, the kind of place you can settle in and stay for a while.

Absinthe is clearly the star of the show, but don’t let it scare you away! If you’re not familiar with absinthe, it has a licorice-like flavor and is pretty bitter. I’m not going to lie, I expected the drinks to be much harder to take down, but instead I was met with absinthe-infused cocktails that were balanced in a way that made them much more drinkable.

Death in the Afternoon did not actually feel like death in the afternoon – it was the complete opposite: sweet, bright and bubbly, almost like an absinthe mimosa. The Harivator was a similar, lighter option that was easy to sip, unlike the La Louisiane, which is made for whiskey lovers that are looking for a richer and spirit-forward taste. Each cocktail gives you a different experience of the spirit without feeling too overwhelming.

Take your time with absinthe, enjoy it, and don’t underestimate it. One piece of hilarious advice that stuck with me: you want to make a friend with it, otherwise, it’ll make a fool out of you!

If you’re feeling hungry, the food menu is worth exploring with its rich French fare made with fresh ingredients. The mushroom fritters are great to share with the table, as are the Bones & Frites. For dessert, the warm Banana Foster is the perfect sweet spot to finish the night. If you like your cocktails on the sweeter side, the Péché Adult Milkshake is deliciously dangerous –- you can barely taste the absinthe.

Be sure to stop in for a drink during happy hour, running all night Sunday and Monday and from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. So if you’re looking for an easy introduction to absinthe, or just want to enjoy French-inspired cocktails and food in a cozy atmosphere, Péché is worth adding to your list.

Amaya Rooftop Restaurant & Bar

Amaya Rooftop Restaurant & Bar is the kind of rooftop where downtown views are just as much a part of the experience as the cocktails. Located on the 12th floor of Paseo on Rainey Street, this Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and bar combines skyline views, colorful dishes and a cocktail menu that makes it easy to stay for a while.

Amaya was made for cocktails during golden hour! There’s something special about enjoying a cocktail with the sun setting and the Austin skyline as a backdrop. The spacious patio feels relaxed and polished with its comfortable lounge seating and warm tones. The space itself is modern and inviting, yet elegant and still easygoing. It has that rooftop energy without feeling too crowded or chaotic, making it a great option for a day or night out with loved ones.

The Clara Costa was one of the lighter options I tried, but don’t let the clear color fool you. It almost looks like water but definitely has a refreshing flavor once you take a sip. The Calabria Spritz was another refreshing choice with its herby flavor. It’s a good choice if you want something easy to sip, and the kind of cocktail I’d want sitting outside on a warm Texas evening. The Suave is perfect for those who love mezcal, bringing a noticeable smoky flavor to the mix. The Amaya Old Fashioned was rich and spirit-forward, but with a warm, almost campfire-like quality that fit right into the rooftop setting. For a non-alcoholic option, the Pomegranate Spritz was light and crisp with a slight tart taste from the lemon and pomegranate.

If you’re coming with a group, the Mezze Plater is made for sharing with the table. It’s an easy way to sample a little bit of everything, including hummus, baba ghanoush, olives, pickles, fresh vegetables, and naan all in one spread.

Between the skyline views, Mediterranean-inspired food and creative cocktails, this rooftop bar checks all the boxes. Whether it’s for happy hour, a date night, or a night out with friends, Amaya makes it easy to lose track of time, and will quickly become one of your new favorites to frequent.

SAN ANTONIO

Bar 414

Step into a realm of spirits at Bar 414, located in the historic Gunter Hotel. In this homage to blues legend Robert Johnson’s first recording in 1936, upstairs in the hotel’s very own room 414, much of the original bar is still intact. Carefully managed during renovation, Bar 414 retains many original touches, from the tarnished gold railings to the wooden accents. Bringing this century-old landmark into modern luxury is the menu, which features local favorites like Sage-ing the Spirits, served with fresh sage, and The Devil and Me, a fruity bourbon concoction inspired by the legend of Robert Johnson and the Devil. Stay long enough, and you might see a spirit or two beyond your glass.

El Ultimo

Possibly the most speakeasy of the bunch, El Ultimo is tucked away somewhere in Mexico Ceaty. Clues are everywhere, but if you ask around and answer the prompts correctly, you’ll be guided past a faux wall and into the back of house, where the drinks and snacks reflect authenticity and flavor.

Dive into an agave flight and sample some of the best tequilas or mezcals, or ask about the rotating seasonal cocktail, made fresh and available only that day. Or spark a conversation with the bartender and have them whip up a bespoke cocktail, alcoholic or nonalcoholic, just for you. While the room is small yet mighty, you can reserve your spot here.
