With Labor Day upon us, this is the perfect time to take advantage of the incredible late summer veggies which are still at their peak flavor. When complemented with an expertly selected wine and a great album, you’ve got perfect entertaining harmony.

Based on her upcoming cookbook*, Jordan Zucker, host of Girls Guide to Sports, has put together a fun end-of-summer menu. With four seasonally-inspired recipes (and a cocktail for the non-wine drinkers), wine pairings and complementary soundtracks to go with each, it’s time to grab your mixing bowl, pour yourself a glass of vino, and plug in your earphones. Here we go!

*One Dish – Four Seasons: Food, Wine, and Sound All Year Round, by Jordan Zucker, will be available October 1.

Appetizer: Crab & Dill Guacamole

Jordan says: “Guac is always a crowd-pleaser at a party, and freshly made guac is in a whole different league than pre-made. You’ll find authentic variations like mine all over Mexico. This guacamole can be served as a dip with pita or tortilla chips, or add it to your taco bar or use it to top tuna.”

Sip: Sauvignon Blanc Cloudy Bay Listen: The Coup, Sorry to Bother You Soundtrack

Salad: Roasted Corn Caesar with Squash “Croutons”

Jordan says: “We’re not big on croutons in my family. They’re dry, tasteless, and a waste of calories in our opinion. Sure, ditching the croutons is an unconventional approach, but it makes the salad the star instead of merely a vessel for a heavy, goopy dressing or a substitute cheese cracker.” Food Stylist: Vivian Lui; Photo Pete Lee

Sip: Albariño Mar de Frades Listen: Armik, Rosas del Amor

Main: Summer Squash Confetti Pasta

Jordan says: “When I was a kid, I would dream about jumping into the Strega Nona book (by Tomie dePaola) and eating my way out of the noodle world. I may have that dream again tonight. This pasta is hopefully a departure from the standard marinara sauce, celebrating the season’s bounties along the way.”

Sip: Vinho Verde ‘Famega’ Listen: Jamiroquai, Emergency on Planet Earth

Side: Ginger-Garlic String Beans & Okra

Sip: Flor Prosecco Listen: Anders Osborne, American Patchwork

Cocktail: “Heir” of the Dog-arita

Jordan says: “Tequila rocks is my go-to cocktail. (My current fave, a.k.a. “tequila candy,” is Casamigos Reposado). I never add any sweetener to my drink – hold the agave at all costs. I spend half my life bargaining with bartenders to make my drink sans simple syrup, despite their resistance to serving it “unbalanced.” Just try this my way – you might surprise yourself!” Food Stylist: Vivian Lui; Photo Pete Lee
