Record-setting Baylor sprinter embraces faith, perseverance and purpose while building a legacy beyond the finish line.
After arriving at Baylor University as a transfer from Louisville, Kentucky, Tiriah Kelley knew she was stepping into one of the nation’s premier track and field programs. The transition meant adapting to a new coaching staff, teammates and expectations, but it also opened the door to the most successful stretch of her athletic career.
Today, Kelley has become one of Baylor’s most accomplished sprinters, rewriting the school’s record book in the 200 meters, earning multiple All-America honors, capturing a Big 12 championship and qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in multiple events. Yet for Kelley, the accolades tell only part of the story. Behind every record is a commitment to faith, preparation and trusting a process that has shaped her both on and off the track.
A New Beginning at Baylor
Looking back, Kelley describes transferring to Baylor as one of the best decisions she has ever made. Like any transfer athlete, she had to start over. Learning a new coaching philosophy, adjusting to different training methods and building relationships with teammates required patience. Off the track, there were new academic routines, a new community and the challenge of finding her place. Throughout the transition, Kelley says her faith became her greatest source of stability.
“It kept me grounded during the uncertainty and reminded me to trust the process, even when I couldn’t see the full picture,” she says.
That mindset continues to guide every aspect of her career.

Records Were Never the Goal
Although Kelley now owns Baylor’s indoor and outdoor 200-meter records, she insists those milestones were never her primary focus. Instead, she concentrated on improving every day. During her first season at Baylor, she began seeing steady progress and realized that long-standing records were within reach. Even then, she remained committed to daily improvement rather than chasing history.
“The records became a possibility because of the daily work, not because they were the goal,” she explains.
Of the two accomplishments, breaking the outdoor school record carries special significance. The outdoor season represents the culmination of months of preparation while competing against many of the nation’s top sprinters. Kelley says that moment allowed her to reflect on the sacrifices, challenges and people who helped make it possible.
“It wasn’t just about the time,” she says. “It represented the journey.”

Learning to Thrive Under Pressure
Winning the 2024 Big 12 Outdoor Championship became another defining moment in Kelley’s career. Rather than eliminating pressure, she learned how to embrace it.
“Pressure isn’t something you eliminate,” Kelley says. “It’s something you learn how to manage.”
Sprint races are often decided by hundredths of a second, leaving little room for mistakes. Instead of worrying about circumstances beyond her control, Kelley focuses on her effort, preparation and mindset. That approach paid off again at the NCAA West Regional, where she tied Baylor’s school record in the 100 meters with an 11.06 and ran 22.20 in the 200 while advancing to the national championships. Those performances reinforced a lesson she continues to carry into every race: trust the preparation.

Competing Against the Nation’s Best
National championship meets once felt intimidating. Now Kelley sees them differently. Experience has taught her that the biggest races are still just races. By the time championship competition arrives, the work has already been done. Rather than worrying about the athletes in neighboring lanes or what’s at stake, she concentrates on her established routine and executing her race plan.
“The training is done,” she says. “There’s nothing I can change at that moment.”
Instead of viewing elite competition as overwhelming, Kelley now welcomes the opportunity to measure herself against the country’s best sprinters.
Success Is Shared
While Kelley enjoys individual accomplishments, she says some of her favorite memories have come as part of Baylor’s relay teams. Qualifying for the NCAA Championships in multiple sprint events demonstrated both her individual talent and her value as a teammate. Relay competition, she explains, requires accountability and trust because every athlete contributes to the final result.
“Being a good teammate has also helped me become a better individual athlete,” Kelley says.
Training alongside talented teammates raises everyone’s level while creating an environment where athletes genuinely celebrate one another’s success.

Beyond her success on the track, Kelley has also embraced opportunities to grow off of it. Through Baylor Athletics, she joined Ryde:’s Collegiate Program, an NIL initiative that partners with standout student-athletes, while helping them develop their personal brands and prepare for life outside of sports. Ryde: is known for its line of science-backed, pocket-sized 2oz functional wellness shots designed to support focus, energy, relaxation, and sleep—making it a natural fit for high-performing collegiate athletes balancing competition, academics, and everyday life.
For Kelley, the partnership was driven by authenticity. She says she first discovered Ryde: FOCUS through Baylor Athletics and began using it before exams and race days before ever becoming an ambassador. “One of the reasons I partnered with Ryde: is because I genuinely used and believed in the product,” Kelley says. “I’ve always believed that trust is earned through consistency, and I want people to genuinely trust the things I choose to represent.”

Confidence Through Preparation
When asked how she handles the expectations that come with elite sprinting, Kelley’s answer remains remarkably consistent. Preparation creates confidence. By race day, she knows the work has already been completed. Her focus shifts entirely toward execution rather than outcomes, rankings or expectations. She also credits the support of coaches, teammates, family and her faith for helping her remain grounded.
“One race doesn’t define who I am,” she says.
That perspective allows her to see pressure as an opportunity instead of something to fear.
Honoring Baylor’s Tradition
Joining Baylor Track & Field meant becoming part of one of college athletics’ most respected sprint programs. Rather than feeling intimidated by that history, Kelley has found it motivating.
She credits the culture of accountability and encouragement for helping elevate her performance. Everyone expects excellence, she says, but everyone also wants to see each other succeed. Beyond athletics, Baylor has encouraged Kelley to think about life after competition and develop professionally while continuing to grow as both an athlete and a young woman.

A Legacy Beyond Records
As Kelley reflects on her journey from Louisville to Baylor, she believes her greatest growth has come from becoming more intentional with her choices. Consistency, patience and trusting the process have produced breakthroughs on the track, but they’ve also strengthened her character.
“Success is about much more than performance,” she says. “It’s about growth, relationships and the person you’re becoming along the way.”
When her Baylor career eventually comes to an end, Kelley knows records are meant to be broken. What she hopes future Baylor sprinters remember isn’t simply her name in the record book. Instead, she hopes they’ll remember someone who competed with integrity, supported her teammates, remained authentic in every opportunity and left the program stronger than she found it.
For an athlete whose journey has been defined by faith, perseverance and steady progress, that may prove to be the most meaningful accomplishment of all.
