Texans looking for an authentic and personalized custom hat seek out Jimmy Pierce for his hands-on approach and attention to detail.

Over the years, his work has attracted a clientele that values craftsmanship and precision. Tucked in the main street in Hutto, Texas, Pierce’s studio offers a traditional and personal approach to hat-making, an accessory that has been a staple of Texas fashion for decades.

Pierce is one of two custom hat makers in Central Texas, operating out of his Hutto-based studio just outside Austin. As a ninth-generation Texan, Pierce is a Hutto native and has come full circle by establishing his made-to-order hat business in the same town that shaped him. His studio combines southern hospitality with the retail space, where buying a hat from Jimmy Pierce Designs is an experience of being in an unmistakably Texan environment. Guests are greeted with a curated selection of Texas books written by Texas authors, a rotating vinyl soundtrack pulled from Pierce’s extensive collection, and often a pour from his selection of whiskey. The atmosphere is intentional, designed to be an immersive experience that clients can enjoy.

Since entering the custom hat industry in 2005, he has spent nearly 20 years designing and hand-shaping hats from beaver felt through a process rooted in traditional craftsmanship and a highly personalized approach. Each piece is adapted to the individual client. His path to hat-making started at Texas Christian University, where he studied theater design. His background in design has served as a pillar in his work. Pierce focused on structure, proportion, and fit, which align with the principle rooted in stage design. Through his hats, fit, symmetry, and silhouette are carefully considered, making each hat personal, visually striking, and comfortable for everyday wear or a special occasion.

Pierce’s hat-making process uses balance and form, two elements that are central to every finished piece. Each hat is handcrafted from beaver skin and shaped using steam, but the color and style are personal to each client.

First, the client picks out the color and size of their hat. Second, the client’s head is measured using a conformateur. Then the client picks out the kind of top design they would like and the accessories, including feathers and belts. Pierce works his magic and makes the client’s dream hat!

The process is collaborative and guided. While clients make key aesthetic choices, Pierce applies his trained eye to ensure balance, proportion, and longevity. For example, flat hats can lose their shape over time due to rain and other elements, but Pierce is honest about the process of maintaining the hat for the longest wear. Buying a custom hat is both educational and enduring—the process teaches the wearer about craftsmanship, and the finished piece becomes an investment and, ultimately, an heirloom.

Pierce emphasizes education and care as part of the custom process. He said you can treat the hats like “a bottle of wine.” He advises clients not to leave hats in hot cars, allow them to air dry after exposure to moisture, and to clean them gently with cold water when necessary. Made from durable beaver skin, the hats are designed to maintain their shape over time with proper care.

In addition to personalized individual orders and fittings, Jimmy Pierce Designs regularly hosts group events like bachelor/bachelorette parties, corporate events, chamber events, and ladies’ night events. The gatherings make custom hat-making a social space and a special memory. The hats serve as keepsakes, tied to a shared experience with loved ones.

Pierce maintains an active presence in the Texas event circuit through his event hosting. This year marks the fifth year of participating in Rodeo Austin, where he appears during the first week of March alongside the barbecue cook-off. The event coincides with the opening weekend of the South by Southwest, bringing visitors from across the country and internationally to see Pierce’s designs. The overlap has introduced Pierce’s work to a broader audience, as many people encounter his custom hat-making through his booth at events. Among his events, booths, and Hutto studio, Pierce is a weekly guest on the Drinking Texas radio show – making him intertwined with Texan culture both in person and on the air.

While his hats travel across Texas, Pierce’s work is grounded in the relationships he builds with the people who wear them. In 2024, Pierce celebrated the 20th anniversary of Jimmy Pierce Designs with an annual customer appreciation event held each June – a celebration for the customers and the milestone Pierce hit for his highly specialized niche. As one of the few custom hat makers in Central Texas, Pierce continues to focus on his niche craftsmanship, fit, and long-term quality rather than rapid expansion. His business thrives on personal connections, customer relationships, and a reputation built over time.

Pierce’s work resonates far beyond Hutto. While Jimmy Pierce Designs is a local Texas niche in central Texas, his work speaks for itself. Each hat reflects a balance of tradition and individuality, shaped not only by materials but also by experience and design intuition. In a state where hats hold cultural, practical, and symbolic meaning, Pierce’s hats stand as functional objects, fashion statements, and memories that are crafted to stand years of wear.

By blending craftsmanship, community engagement, and a love for Texan heritage, Pierce has built more than a brand. His hats carry personal histories, shaped in beaver felt and finished with thoughtful details. Ultimately, Jimmy Pierce Designs reminds wearers that true luxury lies in skill, time, and connection.
