Whether you’re an Austinite looking to view the city in a fresh way or an out-of-towner wanting to get acquainted with the city’s unique charm, experience The Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta – a historic hotel that’s been a staple of the Austin skyline for a century.
If you want to have a grand time and feel like royalty, stay at The Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel. Experience one of Austin’s oldest landmark hotels built in 1924 – situated in the heart of downtown on the well-renowned Congress Avenue.
As soon as you step foot in the historic hotel, you’re greeted with a color palette that screams royalty, and a New Orleans French colonial vibe that continues into the wrap-around terrace on the second floor.
Right outside Stephen F’s Bar & Terrace is a grand piano to set the tone for its elegant, yet Texas-chic interior. In the 20th century, this place used to be called the Hippopotamus Lounge and Piano Bar, providing an enchanting space for engaging conversations and refreshing libations. So much so that back in the day, congressmen and notable figures made laws in this said lounge.
Fast forward to now, the hotel is still bringing its unique 100 year old charm to the best of the city with the launch of the hotel’s iconic Royal Mascot “The Baron of Austin.” From its perch in the lobby to its appearance in the beautifully decorated rooms, you’ll catch many glimpses of this royal Hippopotamus throughout the hotel, welcoming guests with its vibrant personality and the mantra, “Long Live the Guest.”
The lounge’s dim lighting, red furniture, and iconic cigar bar elevate the feeling of an underground speakeasy. Not only is Stephen F’s Bar & Terrace the only place in Austin that boasts an outdoor terrace along Congress Avenue, but it’s also the only place in the city where you can smoke a cigar and have peace of mind in a lavish and cozy atmosphere.
Enjoy eccentric hand-crafted cocktails, local craft beers, and scrumptious wines for a romantic night on the town, or sip and work while taking in the Austin breeze and views from the patio terrace. We recommend trying the Lady Bird cocktail that comes in a cute bird glass. If you like light, sweet and strong, this is the bird for you. For something stronger, I had the cocktail of the day which was the Austinite Manhattan that came with a fancy roasted marshmallow on top.
You’ll easily make yourself at home in these elegant and beautifully decorated furnished rooms and suites. Stay in the one bedroom suite that includes a private bedroom with one king bed and a separate living area that features a sofa bed, armchair, ottoman, and work desk with chair.
Take in the astonishing views of the Paramount Theater and Texas State Capitol directly from your room. You’ll appreciate the in-room amenities such as the mini-fridge, coffee maker, laptop-size safe, and lighted make-up mirror.
For those who are looking for a prime wedding venue in the heart of the city, Royal Sonesta also has a stunning Capital Ballroom and Terrace with stellar views, and a dedicated catering staff to plan every detail to ensure you have the royal wedding of your dreams.
Even if you’re in town strictly for business, you can host your next event in one of the six versatile spacious meeting rooms and get down to business anytime with the 24-hour business center, which features printing and faxing facilities.
On the flip side, if you’re strictly here to treat yourself to the ultimate relaxation or self-care trip, take a dip in the indoor pool and soothing hot tub. Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you have to cross working out off the agenda. Break a sweat in the 24/7 state-of-the-art fitness center, complete with cardio and strength equipment, free weights, and a Peloton Bike.
When you work up an appetite, head down to the Roaring Fork, the cozy ground-level restaurant where you can indulge in Old West-inspired cuisine with a modern twist. Satisfy your cravings with premium steaks, meat specialties, and delicious sides.
Wake up in the morning to start your day with a savory mouth-watering breakfast at Café Fuller featuring a diverse range of hot and cold dishes, including favorites like french toast, steak & eggs, smoked Texas brisket benedict and more. No need to search the city for breakfast tacos when you have the brisket tacos down here at Café Fuller. The bread on the Avocado Toast is deliciously buttery. Tip: add a poached egg on top. Stick with the classic Fluffy Pancakes that lived up to its name. Other classic breakfast staples include Migas, Southern Style Biscuits & Gravy, Griddled “French Toast” and more seasonal delicacies that cater to all tastes and preferences.
Personally, when I stay in a city I like to be surrounded by all the action and take advantage of its most walkable places. Exploring by foot is a great way to discover the city in a new way. The best part about the hotel’s central spot is the ability to discover some of Austin’s most famous landmarks at your fingertips, such as Lady Bird Lake or Zilker Park. You can catch a show at Paramount or Antones, party on Rainey, or grab some drinks and food at the infamous 6th Street. Looking for more family-friendly fun? The Austin Zoo is not far from the hotel.
