When you think of British Columbia, it’s easy to picture snow-capped mountains, lush green rainforests, and a sparkling coastline that seems to stretch forever.

On a recent trip, we had the chance to explore three distinct destinations that truly capture the spirit of BC: the cosmopolitan energy of Vancouver, the coastal charm of Nanaimo, and the outdoor adventure hub of Campbell River. Each offers its own flavor of Pacific Northwest magic—whether you’re sipping wine with a waterfront view, hopping a ferry into a historic harbor town, or teeing off at a golf course framed by towering evergreens. This trio makes a perfect sampler for anyone eager to experience the best of Canada’s wild beauty paired with world-class hospitality.

Vancouver’s Fairmont Waterfront

When you’re in Vancouver, location is everything—and the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel delivers in spades. Set right along the harbor, this property places you steps from the city’s buzzing waterfront action.

One of the highlights of our stay was a corner room with sweeping, floor-to-ceiling views—not only from the bedroom, but also from the bathroom! Watching the city light up at night from such a vantage point felt like a quintessential Vancouver moment.

For a little downtime, I found my way to the rooftop outdoor pool. Though it was bustling with fellow guests, it was still a peaceful spot to sink into a lounge chair with my latest novel.

Dining at ARC

The on-site ARC Restaurant became one of my favorite culinary stops. Dinner on their patio set the stage for a magical evening, complete with a local busker providing music from across the street. The hearty, flavorful menu paired beautifully with a curated wine selection, and the experience struck that perfect balance of urban energy and relaxed dining. Breakfast the next morning at ARC kept the high standards intact with its fresh, local offerings.

A Taste of Vancouver

Just a short stroll from the hotel, we discovered the Cactus Club Café. Their outdoor patio offers views of the water, making it a great spot for soaking up Vancouver’s coastal charm. We sampled a Four Winds Pilsner from Delta, BC, alongside shareable plates like the rich crab dip and zesty fish tacos. It was the ideal casual complement to our stay.

Whether it’s the unbeatable harbor views, the energetic dining scene, or simply having Vancouver’s highlights right outside your door, the Fairmont Waterfront is a stylish and convenient home base for exploring this vibrant Canadian city.

If you’ve been searching for a destination that blends rugged Canadian adventure with the refined comforts of a full-service resort, let me introduce you to your next getaway. Tucked along Vancouver Island’s stunning coastline, just two hours north of Nanaimo, Campbell River welcomes its newest star: Naturally Pacific Resort, which opened its doors in May 2024.

Owned by the Mailman family, the resort is a true passion project that reflects years of thought and care. Beyond building a hotel, the family created a sanctuary that celebrates both sustainability and connection. With an on-site greenhouse, farm, beehives, and orchard, their commitment to farm-to-table dining shines brightly at Carve Restaurant.

Golfers will find themselves right at home here. The 18-hole public golf course boasts memorable signature holes, and next door, the resort’s Velocity Driving Range & Lounge takes practice to new heights. With eight covered bays powered by TopTracer technology, you can virtually tee it up at Pebble Beach or other iconic courses, all while enjoying a pub-style menu of pizzas, sandwiches, and local beer and wine.

The Immersion Spa + Wellness is a serene retreat located on the bottom floor. Whether you prefer a calming aromatherapy massage or a deep tissue signature treatment, the spa caters to every mood. Don’t miss the mineral pool, which can be reserved privately by the hour, accompanied by Italian-designed experiential showers that bring the spa experience to life.

There are, however, wellness offerings just outside the backdoor of the resort, available to all guests: an indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, steam room, and sauna—all designed for the perfect unwind after a day of exploring.

Adventure Awaits in Campbell River

Known as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” Campbell River offers some of the best fly-fishing in North America. Imagine casting your line for salmon or trout while framed by pristine rivers and breathtaking wilderness. Wildlife lovers can embark on whale-watching excursions, spotting orcas, humpbacks, dolphins, and eagles depending on the season. Many tours even weave in Indigenous storytelling, connecting you more deeply to this remarkable place.

Filling the Gap in Coastal Luxury

As Marketing Manager Vanessa O’Neill explained to me, “Campbell River has long been a hub for outdoor adventure, but until now, it lacked a full-service resort that paired high-end amenities with direct access to nature. Naturally Pacific fills that gap. Guests don’t have to choose between comfort and adventure; they can have both.”

Naturally Pacific Resort captures the scene of Vancouver Island’s coast: a place where water meets land, comfort meets adventure, and guests are invited to recharge while immersing themselves in nature’s beauty. Whether you come for golf, spa, or the thrill of a salmon run, this brand-new resort is worthy of your traveler’s map.

Nanaimo: A Charming Gateway to Vancouver Island

One of the most popular ways to reach Vancouver Island is by ferry from the mainland city of Vancouver, docking in the small but vibrant coastal town of Nanaimo. This community, with deep First Nations roots, was originally built on mining and forestry industries. Today, Nanaimo is in the midst of a refreshing revitalization—welcoming travelers with a blend of history, culture, and coastal charm.

Nanaimo was the perfect stop. Photo Marika Flatt.

Just 90 minutes north of the capital city of Victoria, and within easy reach of the beloved beach town of Tofino, Nanaimo makes a perfect stop for travelers who want to get a taste of island life without straying too far off the path.

Where to Stay

Courtyard by Marriott Nanaimo hits the sweet spot when it comes to location. Just a block from the scenic harbor walkway and another block from one of Nanaimo’s main restaurant streets, this hotel makes it easy to explore. Inside, you’ll find comfortable rooms and the bonus of an indoor hot tub and pool—perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing.

The on-site Bistro offers quick and tasty meals, including flatbreads, sandwiches, and salads, plus a small but thoughtful selection of local beers and wines. You can enjoy your meal al fresco or head back to your room with a glass of Tofino Lager in hand.

Exploring the Waterfront

Walking the waterfront is a must do! Photo Marika Flatt.

Nanaimo’s waterfront path is a highlight. This scenic walkway lets you breathe in the salty coastal air while taking in the town’s charming vibe. Along the way, you’ll come across bakeries serving the town’s iconic treat: the Nanaimo bar. (Tip: grab one at Red’s Bakery for a sweet treat!) If you’re in the mood for something a little more festive, head to Penny’s Palapa, a lively dockside bar where a frozen margarita tastes especially good against the backdrop of the harbor.

Local Flavor

Start your morning at Gabrielle’s Café, just a short stroll from the Marriott. Their farm-to-table breakfasts are hearty enough to share—the breakfast bowls, in particular, are both fresh and filling. Pair that with a local coffee, and you’re fueled for a day of exploring.

Walk over to Maffeo Sutton Park and hop on the Saysutshun Ferry. Over on the small island, rent a cruiser bike from Jeff’s Kayak & Bike Rentals, a no frills, all character joint, where Jeff is the main draw!

Whether you’re popping over on the ferry for a day trip or using Nanaimo as your home base for a longer island adventure, this town offers a wonderful mix of convenience, culture, and coastal charm.
