I’ve learned that the art of a true seasonal escape doesn’t require a boarding pass or a cross-country flight. For those of us living in Dallas—or visiting from Austin, Houston, and beyond—the ultimate weekend reset lies in mastering the local staycation. 

I love a staycation, and I tend to have them often all over North Texas. My destination for this adventure was Hotel ZaZa Dallas Uptown, an iconic estate that pioneered concept-driven boutique hospitality in Texas. Blending theatrical flair, world-class dining, and an electric social scene, ZaZa served as my private sanctuary for a rare Texas indulgence: an ultra-luxurious, completely car-free urban retreat where high energy meets unpretentious warmth.

I have visited ZaZa several times for happy hour, dinner, parties, and other social and professional events. Earlier this year, I even judged a cocktail event there, but admittedly, I’d never booked a stay. 

Stepping into ZaZa feels less like entering a hotel lobby and more like stepping onto a set designed for modern aristocrats and jet-setting creatives. The immediate transition from the blazing Texas heat into the hotel’s jewel palette sets a dramatic tone. Low-slung seating, the oversized canopy day bed, and eclectic, curated artwork created an atmosphere that felt equal parts European boutique and bold Texas flair.

Checking into “Crouching Tiger,” the largest suite within the signature Magnificent Seven collection, confirmed immediately that this was no place for beige minimalism. Spanning an expansive footprint, the suite surrounded me in rich Asian-inspired artwork, deep mahogany furniture, lush velvet upholstery, and opulent decor. The suite is 2,145 square feet, with an open concept living, formal dining, kitchen area with two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and a laundry room. I spent my first afternoon unpacking, taking in the bespoke room layout, and enjoying a chilled welcome beverage created especially for me while soaking in views of the surrounding Uptown neighborhood from the spacious balcony.

Before heading out for dinner in the neighborhood, I connected with the Senior Operations Manager, Jack Clarke, for an exclusive walkthrough of the estate and bungalow accommodations. While walking the property, I learned a little about ZaZa’s next chapter. The property is gearing up for a major renovation to expand the iconic pool lounge space past its current boundaries—all while fiercely preserving the whimsical, unpretentious “ZaZa DNA” that regulars like me have cherished for years.

One of ZaZa’s greatest luxuries is its location in the heart of Uptown, one of the most walkable districts in Dallas. Handing my keys to the valet for the entire weekend meant my evening began with an easy, scenic stroll down tree-lined sidewalks toward Bowen House, a registered Texas Landmark and neighborhood staple just a few blocks away. Walking up to the structure for an intimate dinner and craft cocktails with a friend, it was immediately clear that this would be more than just a nearby dining option—it is an immersive portal into historic Dallas charm.

The History & Heritage

Stepping through the doors of Bowen House meant stepping directly into a piece of Dallas architectural history. Built in 1874, this charming Victorian structure was originally a private farm house long before being lovingly restored and repurposed into a neighborhood cocktail sanctuary. Rather than stripping away its domestic past, the establishment honors it: original dark hardwood floors, intricate moldings, architectural archways, and residential doorframes remain intact, lending the space an unmistakable sense of heritage and permanence that stands in striking contrast to the sleek high-rises surrounding it.

The Atmosphere & Vibe

The ambiance is intimate, moody, and deeply romantic without feeling pretentiously exclusive. The interior was bathed in warm natural light by day, which gave way to the ambient glow of vintage table lamps, brass fixtures, and soft candlelight as evening set in. Plush leather banquettes and walls framed with eclectic historical artwork created an atmosphere that felt equal parts high-end speakeasy and cozy private parlor. It felt like the kind of room where time slows down—where music hums in the background and conversations linger naturally over multiple rounds of craft cocktails and exceptional food.

The Culinary & Cocktail Program

While the aesthetic drew me in, the food and beverage program proved why Bowen House remains a premier Dallas destination.

Our Dining Experience

The cocktail program balances meticulous craftsmanship with clever, memorable storytelling. I kicked off the evening with the Secret Layer, an intriguing, ultra-smooth drink built on Haku Vodka, Roku Gin, and Oka Kura Japanese Bermutto Sake. Layered with finadene, umami bitters, and celery bitters, it tasted wonderfully crisp and savory with a distinct, subtle salinity that made it endlessly drinkable. My friend started with Go For Gold, a rich, fruit-forward sip blending peach-infused Still Austin Bourbon with crème de noyaux, R. Jeleník Amaro, peach Jumex, honey, and citric acid. The result was a perfectly balanced treat—sweet and juicy up front, but grounded by the warm, oaky depth of the bourbon.

The kitchen delivers approachable, indulge-worthy comfort food that pairs effortlessly with the drink lineup. We began by sharing Shrimp Newburg: a decadent, yet comforting nod to classic seafood preparation with a velvety, savory sauce and Fried Brie: warm, gooey, and crisp on the outside, the perfect balance of rich goodness and melt-in-your-mouth texture.

For our main courses, I selected Cacio e Pepe: perfectly al dente pasta tossed in a silky, peppery cheese emulsion and elevated with savory, crispy bacon that added a satisfying depth to every bite. While my friend opted for the neighborhood staple, Bowen Cheeseburger: double-patty smash burger layered with sharp cheese, caramelized onions, house pickles, and secret sauce on a toasted brioche bun. 

The cozy warmth of Bowen House provided the ultimate contrast to ZaZa’s grand theatricality, setting an exceptionally sophisticated tone for my staycation.

Poolside Culture, Culinary Artistry, & The Kalita Humphries Theater

Waking up the next morning, the true magic of a local staycation took full effect. With no travel itineraries to manage or early morning alarms to chase, the entire day stretched out ahead like a blank canvas dedicated solely to rest and indulgence. Stepping out into the morning air, I eased into the unhurried rhythm of the property, ready to sink completely into the effortless luxury that defines a weekend at ZaZa.

A Leisurely Start at Dragonfly

My morning began with an outstanding brunch at Dragonfly, the hotel’s flagship restaurant and culinary heart. Dining overlooking the quiet pool, as the property slowly came alive, provided that rare luxury: an uninterrupted hour to simply sip coffee, take in the atmosphere, and let the remaining stress of the workweek entirely dissolve.

The Legendary Poolside Scene

Unwinding with a good book on a reserved lounger, I soaked in the afternoon sun as the center of gravity shifted entirely to the pool. ZaZa is known for its epic pool culture. This resort-style sanctuary hosts one of the most vibrant social scenes in the city. It felt equal parts secluded retreat and high-energy social lounge—a space where stylish locals and out-of-town guests mingled effortlessly under the Texas sky. But it is also a space where one can escape the hustle and bustle to relax in style.

Pre-Show Dinner at Dragonfly & Conversation

As I stepped out of the sun to prepare for dinner, I caught Jack and Executive Chef Lawrence at Dragonfly for what quickly turned from a casual chat into a masterclass in culinary flair.

Chef Lawrence describes his menu philosophy as “approachable luxury”—unpretentious, comforting food that seamlessly merges classic American fare with subtle Mediterranean influences. Starters like Mediterranean Lamb Lollipops share space with elevated Deviled Eggs on a menu so packed with tempting options that deciding what not to order is the real challenge.

The offerings are frequently peppered with seasonal surprises, and the pair hinted at exciting things to come—namely, a fall concept that will reimagine iconic State Fair staples through elevated plated dishes and more interactive, table-side mixology theater.

Settling in for my final dinner, I paired the carne asada street tacos with a Jack-recommended showstopper: The Miracle Cure. Crafted with gin, Lillet, pineapple, lime, mole bitters, and rare Green Chartreuse, this spirit-forward creation is lit on fire tableside for maximum drama.

Mid-Century Architectural Treasure along Turtle Creek

The arts and humanities scene in Dallas is one of the best in the country. So I decided to round out my evening with a Magic Carpet Ride—ZaZa’s complimentary black SUV shuttle service adorned with steer head on the grill—over to Turtle Creek to catch a performance by Uptown Players at the historic Kalita Humphreys Theater.

Completed in 1959, this architectural gem holds a singular place in history as the only standalone theater ever designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. While several local organizations grace its stage, that evening belonged to Uptown Players—an acclaimed Dallas troupe known for bold, contemporary productions that spotlight multi-faceted storytellers. Their feature, the Broadway hit Urinetown, was a wickedly smart, sharp-witted satire tackling corporate greed with brilliant meta-humor and surprising depth.

Watching a performance inside this historic monument offered me a brilliant contrast of high culture, architectural heritage, and sharp wit.

Historic Trolley & Final Reflections

My final day began with a farewell brunch at Dragonfly before I stepped directly outside the hotel doors onto McKinney Avenue to board the historic M-Line Trolley. Operating since 1989, this charming, complimentary streetcar system offers a nostalgic, scenic ride linking Uptown’s dining and shopping with the heart of Downtown. Gliding down McKinney Avenue through West Village and the historic State Thomas area, the restored, air-conditioned cars loop right past Klyde Warren Park and the cultural landmarks of the Arts District.

I spent the morning exploring West Village, a pedestrian-friendly retail hub that offers the ideal backdrop for a relaxed weekend stroll. Threading through tree-lined walkways, I dipped into local independent boutiques—discovering handcrafted treasures at Nina Berenato Jewelry and custom fragrances at The Scent Room—completely free of traffic or parking worries.

Returning to Hotel ZaZa as checkout approached, the beauty of an Uptown escape became undeniable. Balancing a distinct, vibrant culture of its own with immediate access to historic streetcars, landmark theater, and top-tier dining, the right staycation turns a simple weekend away into an art form.

The Uptown Style & Travel Guide

Navigating an Uptown staycation called for an adaptable wardrobe that mirrored my open itinerary’s dynamic settings. For my afternoon lounging poolside at ZaZa, I brought elevated resortwear—oversized sunglasses and a bold airy coverup. Heading to Bowen House called for chic comfortable, summer attire. For my trolley ride and shopping stroll through West Village, I opted for stylish, breathable walking flats paired with crisp, breathable cotton.
