A playful mountain escape where hiking, dining, live music, and laid-back luxury bring summer camp nostalgia to life. 

Whether you grew up going to summer camp or simply admired the idea from afar, there’s something nostalgic about the concept—especially in the busyness of our daily lives. Days spent outside, a full lineup of activities, and the ability to just “be”.

I think the best summer trips capture some of that same spirit- playfulness, rest, and plenty to do without the rigorous itinerary. Perched on Snowmass Mountain just above Snowmass Village, Viewline Resort Snowmass offers a more elevated version of the classic summer camp escape, where days can be as active or relaxed as you want them to be.

It also feels like summer in Snowmass was curated with Texans in mind. Two Step Tuesdays, a weekly rodeo and outdoor concerts bring a little familiarity to the Colorado mountains—only here, they come with cool evenings and a mountain backdrop.

Viewline Resort Snowmass: Your Home Base for a Snowmass Summer

Getting to Viewline is refreshingly simple due to their free airport shuttle—just be sure to book beforehand to alleviate any travel stress. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is only about a 15-minute drive from the resort, which means you can land in Aspen and be overlooking Snowmass Mountain in no time! In our case, margaritas upon arrival made the transition into vacation mode even easier.

The rooms are comfortable and relaxed, with mountain views that are hard to pull yourself away from in the morning. Clicking our automated window shades and watching the sun start to seep in through all of the windows quickly became part of our routine.

The location makes it easy to settle in and enjoy a slower pace of life. Snowmass Mall is right next door, so coffee, restaurants, and shops are all within walking distance. You can also hop aboard the colorful Skittles gondola for the quick ride down to Snowmass Base Village—or simply walk because why not?

Another Viewline standout is the staff. From the front desk anticipating our needs to the hostess always finding us great seats and our server, Richard, getting to know us throughout our stay. The personal touches made all the difference.

Dining at Viewline Resort Snowmass: Meals Worth Staying In For

Some of my favorite moments of the trip happened around a table, starting at Heathers. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, but during the summer, take the table outside. The combination of cool mountain air and views over Snowmass is hard to beat.

Then there’s the mushroom gnocchi. We loved it enough to order it twice, along with other favorites like the stuffed pork chop and pot roast. The menu includes starters and shareable plates alongside larger entrées, so it works just as well for a casual bite as it does for a long dinner reminiscing on the adventures of the day. 

TLM Travel Hack: On Thursday evenings, make a reservation around the start of the Snowmass Free Concert Series. Sitting outside at Heathers for dinner while live music carries up the mountain is one of the best ways to experience the concert. 

Heather’s is also a great place to begin the day. Go early enough to sit outside and watch the mountain wake up before the day gets busy. Steak and eggs are the way to go before a full day of hiking or exploring, while oatmeal and the power bowl are easy choices when you want something lighter.

Between activities, we found ourselves gravitating toward the Lobby Bar. Before the rodeo, we shared a charcuterie board with spritzes and came back later for lamb sliders. It’s an easy place to fill the space between plans—grab a drink, play cards during happy hour, and enjoy some mid-afternoon French fries before heading back out for the evening. 

For something completely different, The Flower Shop brings a little 1970s ski-lodge nostalgia into the mix. Open Thursday through Sunday, the space has a DJ, creative cocktails, and light bites. It feels more like a tucked-away local hangout than your typical hotel bar. 

Hiking, Relaxing & everything in between: Things to Do in Aspen Snowmass

The best part about staying at Viewline is that you can wake up and decide what kind of day you want to have.

There are hiking trails accessible around the resort, making it easy to head out for a morning walk or turn it into a longer day on the mountain. Snowmass is also known for mountain biking during the summer, giving you plenty of ways to explore beyond the village.

Of course, not every day needs an itinerary. The pool, hot tub, and sauna make staying put equally appealing. The spa offers another excuse to slow down, soothe tired muscles after the trails, and release some of the tension we carry through everyday life.

You can also explore the Roaring Fork Valley without having to spend the entire trip in a car. The RFTA bus system connects Snowmass with Aspen and other surrounding areas, making an afternoon in Aspen an easy addition to the trip. We headed into town for coffee, browsed a charming bookstore, and wandered around before making our way back to Viewline.

Summer Fun in Aspen Snowmass: Two-Stepping, Rodeos and Live Music

If there’s one place where the summer camp comparison really fits, it’s the activity lineup.

There always seems to be something happening in Snowmass during the summer, but it never feels overly scheduled. You can join in when something catches your attention and spend the rest of the time doing your own thing.

Two-Step Tuesdays felt especially familiar coming from the home of the Texas two-step. You can learn a few new dances, listen to live music, and put your new moves to the test. For anyone who would rather watch than dance, there’s green space outside and even a mechanical bull.

Tuesday also happens to be the perfect lead-in to Wednesday night’s Snowmass Rodeo.

Rodeos certainly aren’t new territory for Texans, but watching one surrounded by the Colorado mountains gives the tradition an entirely different setting. We even spotted a few Texas competitors throughout the evening, which naturally gave us someone to cheer for.

By Thursday, the pace shifts again with the Snowmass Free Concert Series, held just outside Viewline. If your room faces the right direction, you may even have a view of the stage.

The concert brings everyone together in a way that feels quintessentially summer. Families spread blankets across the hillside, groups of friends gather near the stage, and people drift in and out throughout the evening. You can make the concert the main event or simply let the music become the backdrop to dinner and drinks at Viewline.

An Easy Colorado Summer Getaway for Texans

There’s a reason the idea of summer camp still feels nostalgic long after we’ve outgrown bunk beds and cabins. It’s less about camp itself and more about having time set aside to be outside, try something new, and enjoy the rare freedom of having nowhere you need to be.

For Texans looking to trade triple-digit temperatures for cool mountain mornings, Snowmass in the summer offers the kind of escape that feels both easy and memorable. And at Viewline, you have a comfortable home base right in the middle of it all.
