Thirty years after bursting onto the country music scene with a string of chart-topping hits, Jo Dee Messina isn’t content to live on nostalgia. When she takes the stage at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth on August 1, she’ll be celebrating an impressive career milestone while introducing fans to “Bridges,” her first full-length album in 12 years.
More than a comeback, the project marks a creative rebirth. Messina wrote all but one of the album’s songs, drawing from the experiences, hardships and triumphs that have shaped her life over the past decade. The result is an honest, deeply personal collection that reflects not only where she’s been, but where she’s headed.
In an industry increasingly driven by viral moments and fleeting fame, Messina has quietly accomplished something far more enduring. For more than three decades, she has maintained a loyal fan base and a thriving touring career, proving that authenticity never goes out of style. Her concerts have become multigenerational gatherings where parents introduce their children to the songs they grew up with, and in many cases, grandparents share those same memories alongside them. As “Bridges” arrives, Jo Dee Messina isn’t asking listeners to remember who she was—she’s inviting them to discover who she is today. Judging by the depth and honesty of her newest music, this may be the strongest chapter of her remarkable career.
Since Texas is almost like a second home to her, we had a chance recently to sit down with Jo Dee and chat briefly about her upcoming concert at Billy Bob’s, her new album “Bridges” and where she is at this moment in her career.
Staying True to Herself
After more than three decades in country music, Jo Dee Messina isn’t interested in chasing trends or reinventing herself to fit today’s landscape. In fact, she says that’s never been her approach.
“I’ve always been somebody who’s done my own thing,” she said matter-of-factly. “With the growth of country music and the format, it just means I still have a place.”
That confidence comes from experience. While the genre has evolved dramatically since she burst onto the scene in the late 1990s with chart-topping hits like “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” “Bye Bye,” and “I’m Alright,” Messina has quietly continued doing what she’s always done best—connecting with audiences one song at a time. Rather than trying to compete with viral moments or changing trends, she’s focused on remaining authentic to herself.

Writing From Life
That authenticity is woven throughout “Bridges,” an album she hopes offers listeners more than just good music.
“I hope that listeners find hope, have fun, and feel seen,” she said.
Those simple words capture the heart of the project. After 12 years between full-length albums, Messina had lived enough life to write from a deeper place. Nearly every song on “Bridges” was written by her, making the album one of the most personal of her career. Instead of writing songs she thought people wanted to hear, she wrote songs that reflected where life had taken her.
That mindset represents one of the biggest changes in her career.
“I tend to focus more on being true to who I am versus trying to fit into a certain mold,” she explained.
It’s an outlook that only comes with time. Earlier in her career, like many artists, there was pressure to prove herself. Today, she’s discovered something far more rewarding: appreciation.
Gratitude Takes Center Stage
When asked what brings her the greatest satisfaction as she celebrates 30 years in country music, her answer had little to do with awards or chart positions.
“Being able to appreciate each moment,” she said. “And also being able to share the love of God wherever we go.”
Faith has become the foundation that shapes not only her personal life but also her career. Whether she’s performing before thousands of fans or meeting people after a show, she sees every opportunity as a chance to encourage others.
That gratitude is something audiences will likely notice when she brings her tour to Billy Bob’s Texas on August 1.
“They can expect to find something for everyone,” Messina said with a smile. “We do the hits and new stuff, as well as a few surprises. The show reflects the enjoyment and gratitude of still being able to do what I love for a living.”
Fans can expect the familiar sing-alongs that made her one of country music’s biggest stars, but they’ll also hear the new songs that tell the story of who she has become. It’s a celebration of both the past and the present.

Music That Spans Generations
One of the most rewarding parts of her career today is watching those songs continue to resonate with new generations. Thanks to streaming platforms and social media, many younger fans are discovering her music for the first time—sometimes arriving at concerts knowing every word to songs released years before they were born.
“It’s exciting to be able to watch how relatable songs can be from generation to generation,” she said.
For Messina, that connection proves that honest storytelling never goes out of style.
Looking ahead, she has no plans to slow down creatively. Songwriting will continue to be at the center of whatever comes next.
“I’ll continue to write about life’s experiences,” she said. “And keep your eyes open for collaborations. You never know…”
A Heart for Service
Outside of music, however, one of her greatest passions is serving others.
For years, Messina has been an ambassador for the Special Olympics, a role she embraced because she believed more people should become involved.
“I wanted to be an ambassador for the Special Olympics because I felt more people should get involved,” she said. “God has a purpose for everyone.”
Her time with the organization has reinforced that mission.
“Just the ability to be a part of the games and learn more about what they offer outside of sporting events,” she said. “The Special Olympics is more than just sports.”
Her heart for ministry extends even further through a dream she hopes to see become reality in the coming years.
“My biggest dream is to get my ministry, Broom Tree Haven, established and active in helping create a safe space of respite for those ‘in the crush,'” she shared.
It’s a vision born from her own life’s challenges and one she hopes will provide rest and encouragement for others navigating difficult seasons.
The Bridge Ahead
As our conversation came to a close, we asked Messina to describe the bridge between the artist fans first met in the 1990s and the woman they’ll see on stage today.
Her answer perfectly summed up not only “Bridges” but also the remarkable perspective she’s gained over three decades.
“They’d see more of an appreciation for the opportunity instead of the need to prove anything.”
Perhaps that’s the real story behind Jo Dee Messina’s return. It’s not about reclaiming the spotlight. It’s about standing firmly in who she has become—an artist, songwriter, woman of faith, and grateful performer whose greatest bridge isn’t between albums, but between experience and purpose.
